On my Pond

On my pond mallards glide
Dunking for tiny fishes,
Mating of the dragonfly
Fluttering neon wings -
Random to my innate eye,
Tracking nature’s patterns.

Tune of a mocking bird chimes
Opus, a sorrowful ballad,
I resist the lure of the bulrushes
Which would fill my earthen vase.

At sunrise the calalillies unfurl,
Stamens arousing the bumblebee
Welcoming messenger of pollination.

In all this perfection, a dirge
Poised to destroy in its path -
Nasty glassy-winged sharp shooter
Stirring my maternal angst.

Beneath the grape leaves he hides
Pestilence of magnitude unknown,
Reminder of the legendary locust
As a biplane flies low overhead
Dusting poison on water molecules.

grrn. It was so nice at the begining and then took one helluva turn.  Great poem and nice manipulation of your reader.

Your reader is transported to your pond with you, quickly comes to appreciate (through your engaging depiction) Nature's truest treasures and then with your sudden, deft turn of phrase shares the anger right along with you. This is wonderful writing, Corinne.

Wow Corinne, this was awesome. Brought back treasured memories of a pond of my youth. Many thanks for that, Juls
