Empty video camera recording memories, < !signature-->otherwise lost on less ambiguous past times. The lens reflects some reality where reality imitates reality imitating a reality not yet visible. But this reality adds ten pounds to the perception of what was only make-believe to begin with. I didn’t know that it was make-believe. It seemed so real to me. How was I to know? Maybe George Gerbner was right, that son-of-a-*****! The "Cultivation Theory" might have been more than just a theory. Far-be-it for me to pass judgment, but it appeared so real on television. Life is so realistic inside that little box. Well I shouldn’t say little. Thirty-six inches, digital, HDTV. I’ve got monster cable, s-video and digital receivers pumping in a broadband reality straight into my living room. It’s visual ecstasy blended ever so delicately with an orgasmic display of sound. 5.1 MULTI-CHANNEL surround sound at that. Now you just can’t tell me, that ain’t reality I’m see’n. PS. For those of you who don't know Gerbner was a communication theorist. The theory of cultivation says that when people who watch an absorbent amount of television don't get out and see the real world for them selves they will be inclinded to believe that everything they see on T.V. is reality and that it is an acurate picture of the outside world. Just an effigy to be disgraced, to be defaced. YOur need for me has been replaced. [This message has been edited by Effigy (edited 07-26-2000).] |

Nice read, interesting too. I believe in this theory, and I think it extents to the internet as well. Sometimes poetry becomes our only reality. Thats why i'm getting the hell off here and going to mow the lawn. Parker |

Why would you ever want to quit?????? As far as the poem itself goes it is very well done and great reading. I also agree with the theory, even though it's just a theory.......I find myself getting addicted to poetry on the net at this site...it is a great site you have to admit. |

Effigy, an very interesting poem enjoyed reading this, I don't watch a lot of tv not as much as I used to once but I remember the tv version of the Famous Five, I used to be scared when they were climbing on these really thin ledges of manors to escape from the bad guys and the camera would show their view of the ground. I get out more these days LOL "A frog, it cannot comprehend the sea Nor me happiness" Paul Draper-Mansun |

Very interesting poem and it does lend one to thought. As for the T.V., I dont indulge in that much if at all. The puter on the other hand finds me at Passions many many hours just reading and enjoying. Maybe I should check to see if my grass needs mowed.LOL Great read. |

Reality imitating reality. I think we've discussed this piece, no? I liked it. It reminds me of the concept of the Red King in _Alice_Through_the_Looking_Glass_. The book is supposedly set in Alice's dream, but in her dream she meets the Red King, who is snoring. She is warned not to wake him up because he is dreaming, and his dream is reality--ie the reality Alice knows is nothing more than the Red King's dream. The question begged is "who is dreaming whom?" Read my "Be Cool". I think you and I are kindred spirits. |
