Eight Fans Crushed to Death at Pearl Jam Concert
COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Eight people were crushed to death at a rock concert in Denmark when a huge crowd pressed forward against the stage during a performance by the U.S. group Pearl Jam, Danish police said on Saturday.

The disaster occurred in muddy and rainy conditions just before midnight on Friday.... all the victims were men. Twenty-six needed hospital treatment.

------------
Shaken by the news, I started scribbling down something, hope it is worth placing for you to see... hope that your share the tragic moment and maybe pray for the victims' souls, and put a moment's thought for all the families that suffered the losses.

Regards, sudhir
-----------------

You just went to have some fun

You just went
To have some fun
But in return
You flew away to heaven.
Yes, it rained
It rained that wretched day,

It rains still,
Drops of blood continue
To fall from saddened dark skies

It pains still,
Wrenching this doleful heart,
Left with tears and sorrowful sighs

Roskilde, in the Danish heartland,
where you went to have some fun,
Rocked all day till the fateful moment,
Rocked till you dropped dead, some fun!

You just went
To have some fun
Well, all you did was,
Left us all heartbroken.

Friends, families sit back and weep,
They have lost more than their sleep,
Misfortune struck its deadly blow,
Fate destined itself in an ugly moment,
An event that took your lives,
And left us in tatters but painfully alive.

Shattered by a single event,
True, I am moved by this 'mere' loss,
Of eight lives, when thousands die
In floods and famine!
This is just another man-made calamity,
A case of woeful ruin

I have been to rock shows sure,
Had my share of head-banging thrills,
I still go to heavy metals festivals,
I just went to one last week
Had my share of fun,
There were fans jumping on top too,
Against a human wall pushing hard
And I was right up there watching Iron Maiden
Watching from 15 feet, and also got pushed hard
But then I knew when to run, run, run...
Believe me. That was more fun
For I live to see the light from the sun,
Oh! I cry for the mother who lost her son.

You just went
To have some fun
But left me sad,
In my dark corner
Shaking my head,
Thinking, pondering
About the wasteful blood shed...

Life is all in the choices we make...and death too. No one goes looking for fun expecting it to be their last moment...well written,  very well expressed.

Tragic, told well in your poem, Sudhir.
I was once carried off my feet as the doors to the stadium opened, my best friend too.  Since then, I tend to opt for small venues.

Yes Jamie,
I heard of that one. In 1979, 11 lives wasted in one of rock and roll's worst tragedies...during a The WHO show in Cincinnati....

And come to think of it, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam is a huge fan of The Who and also performed with Pete Townshend the lead singer of The Who? Tragedy occurs with the strangest comparisons...

Thanks for reading, Jamie, thanks a lot.

it can get rough at concerts, and when you are of my build well it is kind of dangerous when a bunch of 6ft moshers fall your way. But enough about that. I heard the news late last night and I guess I was too tired to think or cast too much of a thought, and I usually don't watch the news...what I am trying to say is that your words brought the tragedy into full focus for me, and after reading your words my heart goes out to those people who lost loved ones. An excellent poem, you have fulfilled an important role as a poet, capturing the magnitude of the event and making it sink in. God be with those who lost someone at that concert.

(Excerpts from BBC news)
Police are still struggling to identify the bodies.
...
The victims were a 26-year-old cadet police officer from Hamburg, a 23-year-old Dutchman and three Swedes, two of them aged 22 and one 20.

Three Danes, including a 17-year-old, also died.

Is this the age to die?
Is this the way to die?
This heart grieves even more,
Teary eyes, swollen and sore....

Very strong words on a subject that is horrific, but I think what is more horrific is the fact that because Oasis and the Pet shop boys refused to play after the disaster, and the gig was allowed to continue there were people asking for there money back, I just cant't believe it. I have been in rock bands for 20 years and there is no way I would play a venue in such circumstances.

Thanks for sharing this

Olias.

James,
You are so kind and so appreciative... Thanks a great deal.

OLIAS,
It is horrifying indeed... its nice to know about your ROCK background... I myself had been a drummer for a few years till career and my job cut off my fun time... Thanks for coming in with your response... and for reading.

Latest Update on the incident: A 24-year-old Australian man died on Wednesday (7/5) of injuries suffered during a crowd crush last Friday (6/30) at Denmark's Roskilde festival....

Pete Townshend from THE WHO wrote on 02/07:
"I spoke yesterday to Eddie Vedder. I don't want to say anymore than that. I passed on what I knew The Who had done wrong after the Cincinnati disaster--in a nutshell, I think we left too soon, and I spoke too angrily to the press and without proper consideration of the fact that the people who deserved respect were the dead and their families."

"Luckily Pearl Jam and their management have stayed in Denmark, and cancelled subsequent shows. Other bands have also marked some respect by refusing to play."
---

Oh, What a tragedy! Devil's prophecy,
While life pulls along and music goes on,
A wild rage is felt as is deepest sympathy
Mourning the souls departed, the ones gone.
---

I hope that you people are not upset by me popping this up like this (already the second time), but I wanted to share the update.... Thanks for bearing with me...
Thanks a lot... sudhir
