The Shores of Alone

0 posted 2000-07-19 11:01 AM

Once upon a time a little girl hears a magic story.
She learns to anticipate love with a proper prince.
She is taught all her dreams will come true.
She knows she has only to wish hard enough,
and her fairy godmother will come, wand in hand.
Her dull life will be transformed to perfection.
She knows all this, there is no doubt.
She waits patiently, years pass.
It's only a matter of time, she can hold on.
More years pass, she starts to change a little.
There is a touch of gray in the lustrous princess curls.
Her corset grows a little snug.
She hates to admit it, but her doubts are growing.
Maybe her godmother missed her,
what with all the others waiting for her as well.
Maybe the prince married someone else.
She shudders a little, a cold chill grows near her heart.
She resolutely steps in front of the fire, and denies the doubt.
If she stops believing, she knows it will be over.
Her lifes hopes and dreams.
Her true love will never find her.
She pushes the fear away.
She addresses the shadows-"Begone! You will not steal my dream."
And she picks up her book
and continues to read....

You'll always be a princess..as long as you believe.  If I had that magic wand, I would make time stand still..at least until your prince arrived.  Love the imagery here...could almost smell the fire, feel the cold....So good, Sandra...so good.  Hardrock

I liked this one really well. I also loved that the aging princess wears a corset, so concerned with appearance. And the message that sitting and reading won't make the prince show up!

I wonder at times if we ever stop to think of the things we teach our childeren when they are small..."believe in fairy tales", but do not expect them to be yours in the end....
ironic is it not?
This is lovely and sad, but such truth lingers in your words!!

Cat,

Do I have to say anything? This one have a vision that we all wish for; except me a boy not a girl. We all have dreams. It just seams they get shattered.

Good Job.

From one Princess to another, the fairytale can still be real, as long as we "keep the dream alive", and your heart never ceases it's passion to write the poetry that touches the hearts of others like yours so deeply does.

God... it's so imbarrasing to cry in the library in front of everybody, but I just couldn't resist...
This was about me what you were writing, every single word. I have not enough words to express how much this had touched me because I was sure I'm the only one who has those dreams and doubts and though I know my prince has married another woman, I still try to chase my fears away and keep believing that the happy end will come.
Thank you so much, I have to save it and keep it with me all the time.
Take Care!

Sandra,

What a beautiful poem.  I have read that same fairy tale, and I , too, refuse to put the book down.  We have nothing left if we let go of our dreams.  There is a song by Tori Amos that your poem reminds me of and one of the lines goes something like "mirror mirror wheres my crystal palace...but I only can see myself"....great post, I really enjoyed it.

I don't believe anyone should try to achieve "fairy tale" standards in their relationships. That would be unfounded and disappointing, not to mention boring. Also, appearance used as a means of attracting a "prince" seems shallow and self-degrading. Believing in perfection and "one true love" is not a worthwhile dream; concentrating on the spirituality and goodness that can be found in simple, healthy, dual-sustaining relationships is a cause more valuable. I hope you can find the latter one-day, and realize the joy in it. Be well.
