She never liked the color blue,
she had black curtains in her parlor,
said they kept out the red lights that line the street
and other lights, she didn't care to see.

Joy was her name
and wasn't that a shame?
Because she had all kinds of demons to spew,
ignoring situations pretending she never knew.
Dark secrets in her very heart,
keeping them was her work of art.

Well those black curtains kept out many things but the worst was inside,
not outside the lace windows.
Joy should have tacked dark curtains over her china cabinet.

That's where the evil was trapped,
came in through the back boards that gapped.
Underneath the glaze of those shiney chiney plates,
that's where little children were imprisoned by the fates.
Golden strings spun out and smiling faces painted on.
Whatever happened to the little boy Shawn?
Joy cooked them dinners set out on fine currier and ives
with best silver forks and shiniest knives.
The knaves ate first and belched and fell with their faces into the jelly.
They were so well behaved and such good men who did whatever it was they wished.
And the ladies of the card court watched with one eye turned away,
as they raped the daughters and layed down the sons with sweet words.

Joy,though,watched with two eyes,
and somehow told herself lies
about the way it was and shoudn't be,
a lace cuffed lady were she.
Perhaps black curtains were hung in her head,
perhaps the black curtain were books she read.
Sitting in her rocking chair,
pretending nothing wrong was there.
Hauling water,peeling toes,
picking ripe children that grows in rows.
And she never minded doors that creak and swing slow.
Or rusted trucks and cars that fill the yard.
Nevermind two alone,or even two apart.
All was perfect in the world of Joy.
Joy was a strange woman......

For the curious few....I don't expect anyone to get much out of this, for most of the symbolism is on a personal level more or less a poem i wrote for only me to understand, but Joy was my Grandmother, actually her name was Ruby, but she was always pretending all was swell and things like sex and depression don't exist. So i decided to call her dear "Joy".Ruby was a very bad woman,in a very sweet way. My family on that side is the type where the men get away with murder and rape and the women's job is to pretend she see's nothing and knows nothing.I was a victim of her ignorance and now i'm finally after many years deciding it's fine to be mad at her for what she was and what she did *please applaud!!*

You are right, i don't understnad, but it is good to write for yourself sometimes.  parts of this poem reminded me Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, i'm not sure why, bu tthat is what i pictured.  i did like it even if i didnt understand.  I hope all is well in your life now and you are able to deal with what happened with "Joy" or Ruby, good luck

Swamp#Faeryie,
Pardon me if I don’t Applaud,
Whereas I think this is a very good rough draft,
I would suggest you rewrite it.

You start off very well,
By your first stanza of you show your poem isn’t going to be
Strictly governed by rhyme, and the second stanza is good,
After that I believe is where you let emotion
Overrule your writing of poetry.
At the end your writing skills retake control from emotion,
And you finish well.

Even as a draft, it was Joyful read.

Inner release is so important...and metaphors often work so well - they don't take you too close - keeps a safe distance from the pain sometimes hey?

even witha sad inspiration, this was a wonderfully told story. i liked the children in plates idea. it was interesting. and the black lace curtains were a nice touch as well.

Well thank you one and all,i didn't expect this poem to get as much attention as it did.
And by the by Prof. Gloom, you are quite right!! I know little to nothing about the technicalities (heck i can't even spell) of poetry. I need to visit the work shop and get a little know how,all my stuff just comes off the sleeve,no method to my madness,i will certainly take your suggestion =]

yes, this was an interesting one- although it is strange. poetry is suppose to be personal though & some is not meant for everybody to understand--poetry is therapy--well it is for me at least--great work   LOVE ELMO <3

I really like the way you expressed yourself here. It tells a very interesting story, giving different perspectives on a situation. There are all too often people who live in a state of denial while the innocent suffer.
