Sacrifice I think if you should come, that I would turn and face Once more the blackness in whose dark embrace The years have lain, and let you, unaware, Pass on unheeding of my standing there. So silently should I draw the masking shade Of night about me, so mutely would be laid Its draping folds, no whisper should escape of pain, Nor straying echoes of a prayer remain. And when the rustle of your steps grew far and faint Into strange distances where new dawns paint The skies, I'd bare a ravaged face and bless The love that gave me strength to keep my loneliness. |
