Your sitting there all alone
I wonder what’s on your mind,
all day and night in an unfamiliar place;
you have nothing left but time.
The thought of what has happened
and the price that you now pay,
makes me wonder if the truth;
is what you think about every day..
In my heart I know the truth
of what lead you to this hell,
discontentment fills my heart;
I have no one I can tell.
I know that you forgive me
it didn’t seem too hard for you,
But it is I who cannot forgive myself;
that is a much harder thing to do.
I  sit here day and night
with nothing but thoughts of this,
assuming that you hate me;
was easier to accept than your kiss.
It would be easier to believe
that you loathe me in your dreams,
But the way your eyes looked into mine;
was a look of love, or so it seems.
I know that it is in our past
that we will never be together again,
and that is punishment enough for me;
knowing that I was the cause for the end.
So please don’t think for one moment
that I am not paying a price, too,
They cannot put me away for our crime;
as they have done to you.
So if you ever wonder about me
it is this that you shall envision,
I, too, am suffering greatly;
inside  the dark world of my own prison.

Interesting how others can forgive us, yet we can never find it within us to forgive ourselves. Great work!

this is heavy..some things are so hard to do, even when we know they are right..how much harder they must be when we have doubts..well done.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Wow! Excellent poem!    Yeah, forgiving ourselves is perhaps one of the hardest things to do sometimes.  And I certainly know what one's own dark prison is all about    Thanks for sharing! Take care.
