What’s in a tear

A tear is made of tender mist
A raindrop, soft and meek
It gathers in the well of truth
And falls upon the cheek

It is the dew from sorrow’s brow
A drop of life’s dismay
A misstep of the foot of courage
In the light of day

When spirit falters from a wound
Cut with a jagged knife
The pain flows swift in lucid drops
From out the spring of life

And sometimes tears of joy may stream
From eyelid’s laden swell
For happiness and sorrow’s tears
Rise from the selfsame well

Our tears need not be bitter drops
On cheek’s most grievous pose
Sometimes they’re sweet as crystal dew
On petals of a rose

Elizabeth Santos

Liz, as always, your rhyme and meter are exceptional. I really enjoyed the turn in the last stanza. Tears of sadness and joy, indeed a well crafted sentiment.

Liz, you've taken something we so often take for granted... it's just a tear, that's what it is, and turned it into a beautiful poem.

yeah, now isn't this the perfect poem.. ^^ so lovely a description, of the little drops of emotion which slip down ones cheeks..
you know, I think sudhir's suggestion of you teaching poetry, in reply to one of your other poems, was not a silly idea at all.. there aren't so many people who manage to capture things in just that special way, as you do...

Yes, I agree with you, Liz, tears of sorrow and happiness, they can entwine so perfectly like a symphony orchestra. You have a particular taste for roses as well, don't you, liz? ^_^ I voted!

I know you've already heard this a million times, but I had to put in my two cents. This poem was gorgeous!  And what a difficult subject to describe...but you seemed to do it so effortlessly.  Excellent.  Definitely has my vote.
