~The Carving~

Walking through my old neighborhood’s streets
I reminisce about my life’s past. The musky
Smell of the hickory trees offer my memory treats
Of a childhood long forgotten; when in the autumn
—my voice was husky.

My feet shuffle their way through a neighbor’s lawn
Full of fallen leaves. There, suddenly my eyes behold,
Through the moist fall air something as eternal as the
—reoccurring dawn.
A simple symbol of a time when the truth of my
—heart was told.

The weathered wood of an old hickory tree
Stands before me as it once did all those
Years ago. Within this wood is a piece of me,
A piece as delicate as the petals of an uncut rose.

I raise my trembling hand with fingers outstretched
Towards this insignia of my past. I trace each line
With stinging pain and teary joy, both fetched
By a single memory, of a time when she was mine.

As I run my chilled fingers over her name I notice a slight
Taste of cinnamon. A faint hint of rose is also in the air
Of this autumn day. Her lips tasted of cinnamon on one
—particular night,
And I believe she often wore rose in her hair.

That night I etched these symbols into this particular
Hickory tree. We both were young with young love
—and young pride.
How I wish now that on that night the future would
—have been made clear
So that I could have seen all this pain that I now feel inside.

It is now clear that nothing is as we wish it to be.
Not all love lasts forever as we hope it will. How I thought
That our love would have lasted longer than this old tree
Marked with a simple carving claiming all that I had sought.

very well written
touched me too

If all was light...then I would have never learnt the dark...from which such truth evolves
from which evolves the light...

Yes, it is touching, it's so nice to have a place to our own..

The beauty of nature is displayed,
not through itself,
but through the creatures
dwelling within its bosom.

Minstrel~
This is the first of your works I have read.
I'd like to welcome you to the family.

The memories etched in this piece
certainly cascade for me.
What a joy to know that others recall
the bark of their tree of youthful hopes.

Wonderfully well-done.
