*smiling here ... true story, just last night

And A One, Two, Three; One, Two, Three

A couple nearing middle life, nigh forty years or so,
Were looking for a challenge, to enrich their lives, and so,
They pondered opportunities that both could share as one,
Together as a duo, forge some mem'ries, have some fun.

But try they might, to make a choice, they just could not agree,
Until one fateful day, the wife came home, and said with glee ...
"Enough of this, you promised me, a year or more ago,"
"That if we could not find a hobby, I could choose, and so ..."

"Surprise! I've signed us up, you see, you had your final chance,"
"So honey, shine your good, black shoes ... the course is Ballroom Dance!"
She stood there with excitement, and a sparkle in her eye,
What joy the two of them would have, while dancing side by side.

He looked at her in horror, gauged her face a final time,
'Twas waiting in anticipation, for a good punch line!
But she just stood there smiling, as his face went ashen-white,
"My dear, you MUST be kidding me ... my two left feet, aren't right!"

He begged and pleaded, terror struck, "Please say it isn't so!"
"You cannot make me take this class, I simply will not go!"
She smiled right back and said to him, "The money's all been paid,"
"We start next week, so shine those shoes ... we're going I'm afraid!"

And so with trepidation, one week later, he arrived,
Outside the big glass walls, he watched the prior class subside;
He looked a sight, as there he saw "Line Dancing 101",
He gave a groan and wondered how he would survive such "fun".

Another couple, hand in hand, walked up to join them then,
The husband, two steps back was lagging, head down to his chin;
And then a second, third and fourth, twelve couples stood in wait,
Each man, a vision of the next, in protest of their fate!

The doors were opened, "Come on in!", the sweet instructor said,
As women eagerly moved forward, men held back in dread;
They circled the instructor, all the awkward couples now,
And watched in sheer amazement, as his partner took her bow.

They floated off across the room, instructor and his mate,
"And now," he said, "It's up to you ... step one, step two, repeat."
Some nervous giggles filled the room, as feet were getting bruised,
Then laughter bubbled from the crowd ... they ALL wore two left shoes!

A few more tries, some more examples, "Slow, quick, quick ... again."
And soon the Foxtrot took it's shape, as music did begin;
The husband held his wife in hand, and started 'cross the floor,
It wasn't long, he took the lead, and got the urge for more!

So now a waltz began to play, the husband took his place,
And mouthed his words, "A one, two, three, and one, two, three" he paced.
And so they floated 'cross the room, this husband and his wife,
The awkward strides removed by graceful movements filled with life.

And there, in arms, he held her, led her swiftly to and fro,
While gazing in her eyes, he found, his rhythm and his flow;
And for one magic moment, he resembled Fred Astaire,
While gingerly they glided 'cross the floor, a lovely pair.

Then suddenly some giggles from another couple came,
It broke the spell, and there they stumbled, laughter filled their frames;
He held her close, gazed in her eyes, "A one, two, three", he cried,
And off they floated, with a sparkling twinkle in his eye.

And then the music ended, all too soon, it seemed to be,
Her husband said "It's over now? I've just begun!" he beamed;
"OK, here's how we'll do it now, when I get home each night,"
"We'll practice all our steps we've learned, so we can get it right!"

"Now, aren't you glad I thought of this?" he said after a while ...
Exhausted, bruised, the wife replied, "Yes dear" ... and softly smiled.

Kit - This is wonderful!!!  You wrote it so well.  The lines flow naturally, as if you are simply relating a story, yet the rhymes are strong and clean.  Additionally, the story describes a form of romance that is stronger, more endearing than anything developed over less time.  This is a beautiful, romantic tale of love
, and sharing.

Oh, Kit~

There came a day
in soft array
when ardor grew
and music played
One, then two
Three, then four
Enchantment gliding
cross the floor
One, two and then rock
One, two and then roll
Dancing the Fox Trot
or doing the Stroll
Shades of memories
do repeat
He's got it going on
with two left feet ! !

Kit~ ... this sounds like such joy
from within your soul ...
I could swear I heard Arthur Murray applauding !
Money well-spent for such pleasured delight.
You're just amazing !
LOVED IT !

Kit - there are some poems that keep me coming back.  This one, for example.  You've inspired me to start looking for a dance studio where Lorelei and I can learn to dance more formally.  Right now we mostly just hold each other tight, press our bodies together however much we think we can get away with, and coast around the floor trying not to bump into other couples too obnoxiously - lol.  Thank you for the inspiration.  Perhaps we can share a dance floor some day!

Read it before and thought I had replied and well I must have been too taken dancing on the stars as I have noticed no sign of me here.  Lovely tenderness and I am so glad to hear that this is a true story.  Now isn't it just like a man to take all the credit for the idea and isn't it just like a loving woman to let him?  Lovely through and through
