Sentinels Trunks of granite And marble Row upon row Watching over their family Of stone acorns Lined up around them The stillness is seldom marred The setting always serene Like migrating birds Humans come here Circling the grassy plots Settling quietly in appointed places With dog-like ears You can hear the prayers Or perhaps see them Like heat waves Rising Memories, regrets And anguish Are palpable Sensitive hearts Can feel the tears The young see the flowers And flags "Tell me about her" "Was she nice?" And the flocks fly on And the forest grows From the seeds planted |

Bill--the words you have used in this poem are so original....trunks of stone, stone acorns...I really like the scene you have painted...and the last stanza was perfect...excellent read, my friend!! |

Very excellent, Bill. You managed to say everything by saying nothing in the conventional way...the mark of a great writer. Well done.... |

Wilfred~ I've walked this forest too many times ... you've captured the hushed reverence well. I appreciate this piece more than I could possibly convey. Thank you for your sensitivity. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Martie, Doreen- I have to many but on friday I was struck by the oblisks and saw a forest for the first time. thank you ~S~ 'deer- I take that as a compliment - altho total avoidance was never my objective Thank you Marge- Since I was 8 - for 60 years now - such visits have been a regular part of my life I can tell you now - it is no longer a totally sad experience - too many friends and relatives are there. Most moving of all was a visit to total srangers - at Normandy Thank you for your appreciation |
