The Falcon and the Yoke “The Clan Hay” In truth and myth, but mostly truth This, tale comes before ye. A thousand years, in gilded gold On shields told, the falcon and the yoke. A Hay a Hay a Hay, Mac Garaidh. The story tells, of a family’s name A farmer and two sons I tell ye'. Near Scotland’s Perth, Danish came To sack and rape a’ fore them. ‘Tis not the end, it just began I tell ye. In Kenneth's time, the third of Line, When the Danish dared t’ take us. An army then of Kenneth's men To river Tay, on battle day I take thee. A Hay A Hay A Hay, Serva Jugum (“Keep the Yoke”) The rant and roar, of blade for blood and gore In battle’s clash, rang fiercely. An’ mortal men, for land and kin, died trembling As day grew long, the Danish strong, now grinin A Hay A Hay A Hay, a falcon’s fame now legend. With loss of friend, Kenneth’s men ran cowrin An’ victory grim, was Scotland’s glory now dimin’ But grabbing yoke, a Hay’ man’s voice was cleaving He stopped the hoard, them cowards bor’ a breakin A Hay A Hay A Hay, a Farmer’s Yoke waved Bravely. A powerful man, of the Hay Clan, stood proudly, Two son’s now charged to help then. With heart and word, gave Kenneth’s men their courage An’ back to fray, with the men of Hay, they clammered A Hay, A Hay, A Hay, Serva Jugum Mac Garaidh Renewed today, the clavers would wave, in glory Like haggis an’ bread, the Danish lay dead as sack meat An’ victory was lead, by Hay and his kin for Scotland Then Kenneth did come, a gift of land won for honor. A Hay, A Hay, A Hay, The Falcon and the Yoke. A Falcon was freed, to land where it heed, fair winnins, An’ acres of land, for the Hay and his clan, now givin To this honor was wrote, In name written and spoke With song by the smoke of the gatherins, A Hay, A Hay, A Hay, the Falcon and the Yoke…. Mac Garaidh…. (Gaelic For Hay) James Parker Haley Sep 11, 2000 (after some research into the background of name and family “The Clan Hay” and some research into old Scottish poetry this is the best I could do to make it sound like old Scottish. I apologize if it makes no sense to a real Scot….. I must say that I love that old poetry.) [This message has been edited by Haleyja (edited 09-11-2000).] |

I am Irish but I too love the old language and I have to admit that I will have to come back to this and re-read it as I have three times now and I just don't have the words to give it FULL justice. I shall be back on this one...."count on it".....printing now to take with me and enjoy some more. |

Can hear this being sang out round the rights of spring rings of fire, dear Park. Lovely! I won't judge the aunthenticity, I'm by no means qualified to do so, but it sings to me! Corinne |

Parker - A great read - You told it well. I have just one other thought (heh heh). Is it just a coincidence that you wrote of the Clan Hay - or was it because you are a Canadian, hey? *heh heh - I couldn't resist* |

Heather of the Clan Baird, a wonderful Clan my dear... and the coolest crest. Their is a big group in eastern Canada... Badge: A gryphon's head erased Proper Mottos: Dominus fecit (The Lord has done this) Arms: Gules, a boar passant Or The Baird Coat of Arms reflects the Clan's mythical origins. It is said that a Baird once saved William the Lion from a wild boar and in thanks was given lands in Lanarkshire. The Bairds spread to Banffshire in the North-east and then to Auchmeddan, Aberdeenshire. They became prominent in this area and provided a long line of Aberdeenshire sheriffs. The Bairds influence in the region was strengthened through marriage into the Keith family, the Earls Marischal of Scotland. A member of the Auchmeddan Clan, John Baird, was created a Baronet and then appointed to the High Court by the title Newbyth, after his beautiful house in East Lothian. I bow to you my Lady... Paula of the Clan MacPhereson, I looked but could not find anything on your Clan, is that the correct spelling... Parker |
