When Daddy Braided Her Hair

First day of school and dressed to perfection
As tears begin to well in Daddy’s eyes
He lavishes her with all his affection
But he doesn’t want her to see him cry
And lovingly, he begins to braid her hair

“Is there really a Doggy Heaven?”
“ And why did Simba have to go?”
Many questions when you are only seven
“Yes, there is, and now he frolics to and fro
And soothingly, he begins to braid her hair

Finally today she can drive on her own
And smiling he hands her the keys
Now she will never stay at home
As she is as free as the breeze
And proudly, he begins to braid her hair

Sobbing fiercely she leans on his chest
As he holds her like when she was little
He wants her home and she knows it is best
As she is shocked by his bones so brittle
And smiling, he begins to braid her hair

“I know about Granddad, my Daddy told me”
How quickly this three-year-old grew wise
Picking her up, I placed her on my knee
And looking at her I can see his blue eyes
And instinctively, I begin to braid her hair

Marina I love it when you write like this.  This is written with the depth of dreams that we would all like to have.  Your pen and your muse treat you well this day.  Beautiful and full of loving spirit.

Thank you all very much.  This poem means a more to me then words can say.  It isn't very often that I allow myself to expose this much of me. Particularily about my father.  He was a wonderful man who's love has continued beyond the grave.

Jeffery, thank you very much my friend.  I hope I am getting better!  LOL

James, thank you.  I hope he likes it.

Mark, thank you, your kind words mean so much

Martie, thank you.  It came from the heart.

Dave, thanks, but girl's sure to come with there share of worries!!  LOL

One Who Understands, thank you very much.  I am glad you think so.

Lm, thank you

Kethry, yes it is to me......thank you

James, yes it isn't often I show so much of myself.  Thank you very much my friend.  You know your posts always mean so much.

Marina - This is an incredible poem.  It touched me very deeply, as I have daughters of my own.  Unfortunately for me, I never learned to braid their hair, but I did learn to impersonate the voices several Sesame Street characters, which I would then use as I read bedtime stories.  I think that counts a little.  I hope so, because in another few months I'm going to have a granddaughter.

A wonderful poem, Marina.  Thank you.

This poem that means so much to you has ... I'm sure ... meant much more than you know, to many people such as myself ... I have braided my daughters' hair ... countless times and catch myself repeating phrases and setting examples that my parents and grandparents used many times.
Thankyou for sharing this beautiful poem

Marina, what a lovely, thoughtful and touching tribute to someone who was most likely the world in your eyes. It's hard to put it all out there for the rest of us to see, but we are all so glad you've shared that part of you with us. Thank you.
