The child on a pink Huffy |

With head hung low, she shuffles up the stony steps Not knowing what the other side holds in store. Blindly, she grasps the silver knob, Passing through the entrance of Change. Shaking, she fills out their questionnaire Turning shamefully away from curious glances. Scrawls sixteen with an unsteady hand Says not a word when she hands it back. Lady behind the desk looks nosy Wears too much orange lipstick. Eyeing the lady with suspicion Takes her seat with apprehension Stares through the glass in longing. Out the window, a child riding a pink Huffy Catches her eye Only for a moment did she allow Her thoughts to follow. Cheeks burning red, her name floats on the air Hesitantly she rises on questioning limbs Follows the woman in white. Waiting would be the truest test of her strength. Incessant flow of chatter she cold not stand. Not now. Time ticks by with her as his prisoner Amidst these pretty painted walls Alone in the blue room awaiting the News. Startled by the gentle touch on her shoulder She cries out. White blurs before her eyes Envelops her in the scent of motherhood. Glancing up, she reads the answer Overly apparent in the green eyes. Burying her own face in her hands She weeps. Consolation is completely out of the question Whispered conversation of Am I and Yes Head is reeling with unanswerable queries. What will she do? Thoughts of the child on the pink Huffy… Soft smile breaks through the tears. Don't care what people say Just follow your own way Don't give up and use the chance To return to innocence. -Enigma |

Sonjes~ Tenderly you've touched on discovering pregnancy at the young age of sixteen. I mentor a group of teens and not one of them believes they are ready to hear that news. They'd rather be 'the child on a pink Huffy' for a few more years. Well done, my friend. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ noles1@totcon.com |

Very tenderly done and as Marge has said....on such a touchy subject. You write well with your pen and this was a real pleasure to read. Loved the anticipation through it all. |

Marge- thank you for reading...an angel you are for mentoring...a painful experience for a teenage girl to go through...my memory is long...nine years seems like yesterday at times Rose- A "huffy" is a popular brand of bicycle in the US. I didn't realize it wasn't universal...narrow-minded of me. Believe me, once upon a time, I was holding too. Mark- Thank you kindly for your words...they mean a lot to me. |

sonjes, this will be my third attempt at letting you know how much I enjoyed this. (electronics ~ sheesh) Your presentation is very interesting, and I admire how you go about relaying details, as the girl encounters them. You keep your reader captivated, to be sure. At first, I wondered if she might be visiting an abortion clinic, and was quite relieved to know that she wasn't. Also relieved at her little smile emerging from her fearful tears at the end. Really a lovely vignette. Thank you! ~ Claire Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |

I read this and memories came flooding back to me. Very well written. I related to the girls thoughts. My smile, through my tears gave me a beautiful baby boy riding a blue Huffy. That Baby Boy is know a young man. And I still smile through my tears. |
