People may come and people may go, but friends are here to stay.
We opened the door and invited them in somewhere along the way.
Life before them was empty, sometimes impossible to bear.
And then when that door was opened, it was known there was something to share.
They enriched our lives with that special touch just upon entering a room,
Hoping a smile or a look in their eye would simply remove the gloom.
After a visit or a talk on the phone, our troubles would disappear,
Even though they're worlds away, their presence was always so near.

On this walk through life they've held our hand, our hearts and souls they've sought.
Though many a tear in time was shed, much happiness to our lives they brought.
With a tear in our eye or a quivering lip, or even if a smile we'd wear,
Just the sight or sound of our special friend made things easier to bear.

In our daily routine, we'd get so caught up, our time it seemed to consume.
Putting important things at the top of the list, with our friends, our life we'd resume.
For if they were taken away from us without warning, just at a glance,
Will it truly be possible for us to say, "I sincerely took a chance?"
Did I make them feel as special as they always made me feel?
Did I ever take them for granted? Did they realize my friendship was real?
There may have been times I could've given more, or listened instead of talk.
After all the times they put themselves on the line as this road of life we'd walk.

Now is not the time to punish ourselves or consequently lay the blame.
The fondest of our memories might be the simplicity of their name.
In our daily thoughts, remembering each name with a feeling held so true,
An inspiration in all our lives the way they gave of themselves for me and you.

This piece was written with tears in eyes for a dear friend who lost loved ones in a tragic situation. To her, my heart goes out!
She reminded me that we have to let our friends and loved ones know how much they mean for the time is unknown when we will never have the chance again. Sad but true and I will never let the chance pass me by to say I love you or I care and appreciate you!!!!!!!!!
