~ ~ ~
I adored a most beautiful penguin on
Antarctica’s icy plains.
We waddled together in the freezing sun
while I dreamed up romantic refrains.
~ ~ ~
“You’re all I’ve ever wanted,” I crooned into her ear,
but the wind was whistling past so loud, I don’t think she could hear.
“You’re the only one I’ll ever love,” I sang to her so sweet;
but all she could do was shuffle along, on sturdy glacial feet.
~ ~ ~
I asked her if she didn’t need a dear and tender lover;
she gaped at me in disbelief, and took off running for cover.
I jogged along racking my brains for any hope at all,
but she flapped out her flipper and tried to make me fall.
~ ~ ~
I hinted for a warm snuggle near that thick soft fur
but she said that to share was much too difficult for her.
I pleaded for a kiss or a small bit of affection;
she kept hustling away from me, to find some protection.
I asked if she could spare a frigid raw fish for dinner,
but she said she had the quick ones to find, all ready in her.
~ ~ ~
I fell on my knees, and begged for her to love me, and I cried.
“You might have better luck with the walrus,” she casually replied.

Delightful, charming poem  - I loved it,
Rosemary.  Thanks - I always love to see
originality -- and different perspectives
of love.

lucky - sheesh, I was just having a little innocent fun on a Saturday afternoon!! You're so funny.

netswan - thank you for appreciating it!

Jeffrey Carter - you're right - that was more than "one" thing, wasn't it!

wayoutwalt - thank you for your comments!  I don't try humor very often, and really didn't expect anyone to respond at all. Witty, huh?  A grand surprise to find that word!  I'm almost never witty.  Thank you!

Marge - leave it to you to find a walrus for me!  Man alive, you must be the queen of all pictures!  Hilarious!  And good plays on words.

Pepper - oh, I appreciate your comments!  I am usually so down-to-earth, it's loads of fun to have someone say it was witty!

Martie - thank you for noticing my rare funny bone!

Good analogy of unrequitted love, delicately flavored with humor.
