Between a laugh and a tear...

The old man sits there day after day
Just waiting, watching, as the world goes by
Always he's been there, not known too well
Just a nod of the head, a quick G'Day

Dreams of days past, very different then
Young man, young wife, seemed a lifetime ago
Has no regrets, yes he lived hard, but well enough
Dreams and promises, just memories now long since gone

Children playing upon the grass
Oblivious to the troubles of the world
The lovers walk by hand in hand
Laughing, smiling, they see only each other

The workers there now, they come and go
Trying to stop the urban decay
Traffic flows by in a steady stream
Noisily, choking all with the fumes

As darkness creeps, bathes him in an eerie light
Street lights on, shadows fall all around
Across the road the girls slowly appear
Old and young, sad to see some quite new

The drunks, punks, and gangs they roam
Seek and destroy what comes their way
He hides and sleeps now as best he can
Sad now to think this park his home

About a park near where i once lived, in Newcastle, the old man is symbolic of all the "old men"  but everything else is all to real today.

Liked your poem.  Well written.  I wrote a similar one called "Homeless" a few months ago that was about a guy i know that lived under a bridge and roamed the streets by day.
Anyway, good job with yours.

Very well done!  Funny, I wrote one similar and I believe with the same name--I'll have to look for it.

Danny....thanks, sad to say that one doesn't have to look too hard to find the insperation behind works such as these.

Hoot....words of praise and encouragement from from one so talented is humbling, but welcomed.

Martie.....thankyou, I would love to see it. I stuggled to find a title for this, still not happy with this one but it seemed to fit best.< !signature-->

You already know I love this one
as it brings back memories from
my childhood that I hadn't taken
out and looked at for a long time.
But I needed to shout out once again
BRAVO!!!!!!
