This was inspired by my daughter, who kicked inside of me for the first time as I was on my way to my father's funeral Dear Granddaughter, You will never see my face Or know the warmth of my embrace For I am soon to leave this earth Before the hour of your birth But darling please remember this Although I’ll never feel your kiss You have a Grandpa up above Who’s looking down at you with love You’ll never be with me to hear The things I’d whisper in your ear So let me tell you of the good Of life and love and womanhood When you are just a little girl With play and friendships in your world Treat everyone with equal worth No matter race or place of birth When you have reached your teenage years Don’t sleep with unwanted fears Confront the truth when you’re to blame And you will never live in shame When you are grown and love embrace And feel a kiss upon your face Remember that your beauty lies Within the deepness of your eyes When you have children of your own You’ll find the greatest love you’ve known If you will treat them with respect They’ll give back more than you expect Love to live and live to love And keep your faith in God above If you will live what you believe Then give much more than you recieve When years upon your face are worn And you’ve a grandchild to be born Only then will you begin To know the joy I feel within I love you, Grandpa |

*tears* again, Elizabeth! This is so precious. I was just feeling sad the other day realizing that Christian never got to know my Dad and vice versa. This poem helps alot. Thanks. Denise |

Thank you all for such dear comments. Franni, all of our poetry is a legacy to our children for it reveals to them more about ourselves than we ever tell them. Denise, I also have such regret that my children never met my mother, for she was so vibrant and fun loving and warm, there lives would have been so enriched. Nan, I believe he did write this Thanks Liz |

This is touching and very beautiful, Liz ... My grandfather was dying when Tiffiny was born; on the way home from the hospital we took her to see Grampa .... He died the next day ... I've saved this and will share it with my family ... Tears here ..... |

Liz, this is beautiful! My mother's father passed away before I was born, and this made me think of him... Keep up the good work! "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -Oscar Wilde |

You've done it again, Liz! I also think your dad helped you to write it...maybe he's your muse? "He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!" -The Crucible |
