“Mom, guess what I had to do today
at work?”  I turned to her with mild curiosity -
for she brings home a new animal loving story, bubbling
every day. But this day was terribly different. No sparkle. Just deep
sorrow.  My interest intensified keenly, my love melting for her.
“What, sweetheart?”
~ ~ ~
“I had to put down two rabbits and three ferrets
by myself, in the bathroom, because the main boss wasn’t there,
and no one else would, even the other boss, when they were dropped
off at the door, abused and dying.  We sent pictures of them by
fax to the boss, and she asked me to do it on the phone.  One
rabbit had a broken jaw, all five were caked with feces,
starved, and dying.  Their bones were poking out;
they couldn’t even stand up.  Their eyes
were pleading.
I just couldn’t let them suffer.
But no one would even help me. I didn’t
let the ferrets watch, because they understand.”
~ ~ ~
Tears stood shimmering in her eyes.
She was only taught how,
three days before.
~ ~ ~
I gazed at my blue-eyed daughter with new vision.
Seventeen, with so much grace; so much
care in her sweet face. So much
strength.  Working at a
non-profit animal
shelter is not
always
fun.
~ ~ ~
All I could do
was hold her tight, and
tell her how proud of her I was.
How proud that she could tenderly use that
needle all alone in the bathroom, to relieve the anguish
of the animals. I did not know how to tell her that
in my eyes, she had just become a woman,
and would never be a child again.
But I know she felt it;
And I believe
she knew.

Rosemary
I don't know what to say, I feel terribly sad for your daughter as I think that would have been just so heart breaking not just to see those animals in that state but to have to put them to sleep as well. What a brave girl (woman) she is.
HUGS to her from me

wow sad story but at the end it turns out beautiful how the relationship of mom and doughter can get closer and how a mom can feel when the child is sad, happy or even growing. I cannot wait till I am a mom hehehehe

Rosemary~
Such a moment of being catapulted
into womanhood.

Touched my heart when she said ...
'I didn’t let the ferrets watch,
because they understand.'

A touching moment you've shared.

You write of a heartwrenching moment, and you share two, her anguish at terminating life, and your pride in her courage and compassion. And I experienced both
Well done

I was talking about this very subject with my customer yesterday. Death is a part of life.

When God told Adam to have the animals in subjection...and that has been passed on to us......I truly believe that means knowing when to end their lives as well.

There is no kindness is suffering needlessly. Your daughter did a kind deed. Painful though it was...she is to be commended.

Rosemary, this a heart wrenching but beautiful story of love.  It touched me, but then everything you write does.

Rosemary....wow, this is wonderful. I am left with chills and tears and even a touch of a smile knowing how it is to cross that line between a child and a woman. You must be so proud of her and if she's anything like her mother, It's no wonder

I thorougly enjoyed reading this soft and touching story.   A caring mother that has sent a caring daughter out into the world.  A job well done.  James

Rosemary

I sit writing this response with the tears just running down my cheeks. Your daughter is quite a woman!! I don't even know her, and I am proud of her. And I am proud of you for capturing this moment, and grateful that you shared it with all us. thank you!!

This is a poem that really touched me. I am a big animal lover, and I job-shadowed the Vet's office many times. I've seen animals being put to sleep, and it broke my heart, even though I knew it had to be done. It's probably much diffrent actually doing it, though. It takes someone with a very strong charactor to do something like that. Anyway, good job on the poem.
