The Iron Gate

There lies, beyond sight, a glistening gate
Its structure, not brilliant, nor design ornate
but just there, out of view, it beckons to me
past honeysuckle, magnolia and marmalade tree

What brings me along to this path every day,
I've  oft'times reflected but still cannot say
As my footsteps fall lightly, the gate comes to view
and my thoughts, with each journey, settle softly to you

For your eyes captivate as the gate's vines enlace
the iron, hard and strong as the lines of your face
but on each reaching bar lies a soft ivy train
And with my gentle approach sweeps to open again.

Dear LadyClaire

THIS IS AWESOME! ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME.  I must print and hang on wall.  I love it.  Right up my alley.

CHRIS (totally impressed)

Claire this is lovely..your precise description leaves me wanting to also see this gate and experience your warm thoughts along with you.  Really would like to see those beautiful trees.  James

what a lovely way to start my day...(smile)
perfection as always Claire...your words paint portraits of emotional beauty

Now for me some words come easy
But I know that they don't mean that much
Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch
You never knew what I loved in you
I don't know what you loved in me
Maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping I might be

Poetry at its finest! And I will remember this whenever I chance upon an iron gate. What a wonderful image. And of course, great writing

I like the whole thing, but this line is striking..

I have to agree with Nan on this one Claire. . . that line struck me as well. . .who knows how or why we take the paths that we do?  We can only follow the heart, and be led, and hope that what lies at the end is happiness. . .

Simply wonderful my frined. . .

A wonderful evocation of both the easy joy and subtle fear of what awaits behind the gate. As always, thanks for sharing; you always impress me with yr words.
