She stumbled over his body he guarded the gates while she swallowed the vodka. His little sister wrapped her small frame around the Christmas teddy. The little guy kept her safe from the boogy man in the closet. There wasn't much else. She passed out on the kitchen floor after knocking down the blue lamp causing it to crack a little. He just began to weep over her large frame, but nothing would wake her. Little boy and little lost girl silently wept themselves to sleep. By morning the woman awoke and fixed herself a cup of java. She asked the kids if they were hungry only to fix them nothing. The fridge was naked with an old beer can and a couple of onions. Mother sent Naples to the store with a coupon. She was to get the doughnuts. Oooh, yummy tin doughnuts with sugar. Maybe, just maybe if there was enough stamps we could buy a little milk for dipping. Naples arrived back with doughnuts and milk for breakfast. Every morsel, crumb and piece was gone in a matter of minutes. It was now time for the clean. The glass around the room from the lamp would be dangerous if not swept up. Mother decided to take a nap and let the kids clean up. The kids knew that today was a new day and if they just cleaned and didn't complain everything would be better this time. SO all day they scrubbed on their hands and knees and even managed to borrow a few smokes from a friend of mothers. When mother awoke is was perfect. The small house was shiny. Cigarettes were next to the coffee cup and the can of pork was roasting on the stove. Mother didn't say much except that she would be back at midnight and to keep the doors locked. The little boy and little girl locked eyes and knew what they had to do. This time they both had to guard the gate, they were tired of doing it alone. Blue Moon |
