Tall in the saddle, full of “True Grit”
He was the Western, and invented it.
All of the virtues, which manhood can claim-
Were rolled into one, they called him,,John Wayne.
Stagecoach, and Hondo, and even Big Jake
Chisum, the Shootist, our thirst these did slake.
Gunman, and Soldier, Indian scout, too-
It seems all the parts were made just for you.
Patriot! Hero! A man of the land-
The beaches of Iwo, to the bare desert sand-
As Crockett in Texas, he made his last stand.
I know with his passing, went more than a man-
A voice and an image, in life and on stage…
His name is writ large on America’s page.
The time of his zenith was more than a fluke…
We miss you Big John….”Here’s to the Duke”!

I'll raise my glass to you and the Duke.
What a tribute! I don't think you left anything out!

My father was a western addict ... as you can tell by my name ... I grew up with westerns on TV ... books ... even comic books ... John Wayne was amoung my favorite and even today I seldom miss one of his movies ... when they happen along
... Well done ...

Slinger~
Well, you rang the bells of memory
with the telling of this one so well.

This mom recalls a 5 year old son
who so admired the 'Duke' that he
sauntered up to me after watching the
morning edition of John Wayne Theatre
and said "My name is John Wayne Theatre,
you can call me Duke or you can call me
Mr. Theatre."

Thank you for the smiles of remembrance.

My glass is raised also.  Nice work with this GS.  Big John was one of a kind.  More than a man aptly speaks to the strong pressence he had on our generation.  Will there ever be westerns made that good ever again?  I liked Unforgiven.  The realism was the best part.

Wonderful work, Gunslinger. Thank you!
