Shhhh... -I- The morning woke with village lights As yet the dawn was still to be With oar on gunwale sounding roll The village fishers flocked to sea And as the sun stretched from the night As village folk meet every day The women and the elders worked Between their chores the children played Within the branches of an elm Whose rigging - child and fairy realm There sortied fleets of castle-ships With pirate-kings at every helm Their bravest took the highest perch First mate to all that sailed below There, looking out, his eyes grew wide Ahoy! he cried, The sea! A boat! The women gathered young ones near The elders looked to echo's way There, in the sunlight on the sea Beyond the fairy elm, she lay -II- The ship was golden. Rigging, foreign Ensign of an opal hue That split the sun and splashed her rays Across a shifting sea of blue Yet not one soul was seen upon her Not one soul did venture there The village held it's breath in beauty Not a whisper creased the air Morning sun had waned to crescent Stars were waxed to guide the way Still the ship swam still and silent Still the village morning lay -III- And as the sun drew from its sliver Silver skirted seas of slate That day that God had twice divided Saw her shadowed sun too late Over water - wind and fury Anchored under sky of stone The village held its breath in fear The sea might wash their fishers home Lightning flashed across the heavens Thunder sounded ever near The women and the children searched for Prayers Almighty God might hear Yet never was there ever answer From that foreign flag that flew Undefended under heaven's Purling skies of slate and blue -IV- As final trace of evening sky On opal-embered seas was cast With rigging lit by Elmo's choirs She left the sea alone at last -V- Now, sleepy village children sleep And dream of fishers' dawn to be Of slip and shingle sounding surf Of elms along an opal sea... Shhhh... Kevin |

Kevin, this is a wonderful poem... It tells a wonderful story, and it's technically quite finely crafted. You've woven your tale in perfect iambic tetrameter, using some great imagery... My first perusal finds some exceptional use of personification, alliteration, metaphor..... going back for more now.... Keep 'em coming.. all righty??? |

*whispering* This is wonderful, quite beautiful! ~*~ Hell is not a place of fire and a devil with a tail and horns. But a place of torment because the light of God is gone. To escape this, accept the blood of Jesus Christ! ~*~ |

I agree with everyone else. I thought it was a lovely poem. ~Astraea "Charms strike the sight but merit wins the soul." "Sometimes stars can only be seen in darkness." "Sorrow's crown of sorrow is remembering happier things." |

This is indeed an outstanding work...the picture you paint with your words is absolutely beautiful! I envy your form and flow here, too This gets a standing ovation here! It's not the love you fear, but the fall from the height~Edwin McCain |

This is indeed excellent in every way. I look forward to reading more of your poems. In the dew of little things, the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. (ee cummings) |

What a gifting this was! Your elements of nature and mysteries of sea provided me a fleeting few moments' journey to this land of sleepy, playful children and their fae~filled castle ships. Your descriptions of the sky were breathtaking, your air of ill omen, apparent. Thank you for this treasure! |

Kevin - Such a beautiful array of verse. ~Opalescent~ imagery that captured me in it's waves. How very, very lovely. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Being a long time sailor I found myself on the inside of this poem looking out and enjoying the view. Thanks, Paul |
