The Rose

There, within the yellow pages,
Lay a single rose;
Aged to brown, and meaningless,
Or some would just suppose.

But to her tender, loving heart,
The flower meant so much;
For in it's fragile petals
Lay the memory of his touch.

The book, it held the contents
Of laughter and of tears,
Represented in a single bud
That weathered countless years.

There beside her death bed,
The wind, through window wide,
Leafed the pages one by one
And blew the rose aside.

And as the rose, in frailty,
Tumbled to the floor;
She took her final, labored breath
And met her love once more.

When you truly know the meaning
of the word Love,
you will also know the meaning
of the word Pain

Ah! I've got chills! Can you be hot and cold at the same time?
Warmth from the passion, goosebumps from your beautiful words
Exquisite!

Young boy and girl in attic bleak,
On rainy day, play hide and seek,
Girl spies a box and takes a look,
And sees inside forgotten book,
Girl takes the book and shows to him,
Weathered pages, yellowed dim,
The book falls open, as by fate,
Before pair lays, page ninety-eight,
What can that be? Do you suppose,
The imprint of a perfect rose.

Loved your poem Ms. Hoot.

Something of my own, a "follow-up" poem to yours begins to bud in my mind; I'll post it when it blossoms.  (And thus we poetic bees and flowers continue to cross-fertilize, and our gardens grow.)

A simply beautiful poem hoot--gave me goose bumps too.

The flower lays tangled
in the memory of years,
pressed against the pages
of time, it waits,
and grows a memory.

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.

Excellent imagery connecting the disintegration of the rose and the passing of the woman. One can easily see the scene being played out. Very, very good work, Ruth.

Misted over even these tired eyes but brought a smile as well. 'Tis an evocative work Ruth.

I read the poem and found it true
For I have something here that belongs to you
The years have yet to come to make it old
But its story is foretold
Written with such softness from your heart
Like the picture that you share holding my art
Dear friend how shall I lay
What I want to say

"A Kingdom for your poetry" I say.

The ability to describe life with words is similar to painting a picture; both can be powerful tools.
