A Miracle

I held a miracle
in my hands,
and watched
as life began.

My lungs
cried for air
as I waited
for you
to take your first breath.

My ears
listened
and my heart rejoiced
as you
took that first cry.

My eyes
beheld frailty
and shed tears of joy
as your tiny eyes
opened, to see me,
for the first time.

My hands
shook
as your tiny hand
reached
to clasp my finger.

And in my hands,
in the miracle of your birth...
I held love.

"I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me , this has always been enough." ~Nicholas Sparks from The Notebook

Oh, Ruth.  The picture compliments the poem so well.  They both speak to my heart. I have tears running down my face right now.  Absolutely beautiful!

 It matters not how strait the gate;
How charged with punishments the scroll;
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Well damn this one makes me misty-eyed Ruth.

I have witnessed this miracle 4 times and each time it has proven to me that miracles DO happen!

My my Ruth.....your a Atom bomb...Just wnen I think you have reached your top....you blow it all away and rape my landcape clean and I find my self standing there wondering where it all went again.  They say the after shock is the most powerful....so I can't wait for that....Until then I will know better and keep my head down as you get better and better

Being in love with someone is more than just saying "I love you"

Beautiful piece.  I especially liked the lines:

My eyes
beheld frailty
and shed tears of joy
as your tiny eyes
opened, to see me,
for the first time

Well, it doesn't get much better than this Ruth...
Breathtakingly beautiful..
I especially like the lines
"My lungs cried for air as I waited for you to take your first breathe."
and
"And in my hands,in the miracle of your birth....I held love."

A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!

Ruth, wow, as you can see by all the replies, this one struck a real chord. I'm glad I came back and found it. Being in healthcare like you, I have seen and experienced this in many forms. But, you have a way of bringing it to the moment. Thanks

Tis picture and poem hit me square between the eyes.  Dont' get me wrong.  It's okay.  My twin babies, born on September 25, 1970, looked so much like this tiny one.  Neither of my babies lived long on this earth.  But I always have joy, mingled with the pain, when I see pictures that remind me of them!  Thank you for the picture, and the poem, both!  One of my babies was born alive, (Aimee Cosette) one was born still, (Patrick Joel). I loved them dearly, and love them still.  If they were born today, chances are, they might have lived.  But life is like that.

Then, many years later, came other losses ...

Rosemary,
I am so sorry for your loss. Have seen many parents dreams shattered in a heartbeat and it doesn't get any easier the more I see. May God bless you and keep their memories dear to you.
Hugs
Ruth
