Economy is out of sight.....prosperity abounds Living wage is going up.....unemployment's down Stocks are at an all-time high....market records fall Interest rates are low with opportunity for all. World-wide conflicts rage but none of which we are a part People who had lost all hope can make a brand new start Everyone is quite well off and, even if they're not, Banks have credit waiting they will hand out on the spot. Happy days are here, for sure. Let's let the champagne flow! It is the greatest time of life that we will ever know. Our futures are assured so let's proclaim that it is great To live in this fantastic year of 1928. |

I know you aren't old enough to remember that year..this is wonderful..funny but tinged with a bit of premonitional horror! I'm keeping my fingers crossed this doesn't happen! |

Balladeer,I'll just echo PdV's remarks! The last thing I want to see is a depression. Great poem! -SEA |

No, I don't think so, either, dovey. Too many safeguards have been put up since 1929. Just interesting to see the similarities, that's all. I thank you all. |

This poem was a shocker to me. I had known that it was a time of prosperity right before the depression, but your words hit me with such an impact, we just never know what waits around the bend, no matter how optimistic things look. Another great one, Balladeer. Denise |

Great poem! I think we can also liken these times to ancient Rome...before the fall. It's rather unsettling. |

Hopefully some of us have learned from our forefathers' mistakes...and we will not "repeat history..." We can only hope! Sunshine Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

I've heard my parents tell the tales Of those depression times When there were no jobs to work... "Brother, can you spare a dime?" The ache inside me's deep, I hadn't Noticed things were looking up. If your life's full of happiness... Brother, could you spare a cup? Great poem, Balladeer!! (And you were how old in 1928???? *G*) |

'Deer - You set up this poem brilliantly! It is amazing how, periodically, the other shoe gets raised so it can fall again. Nice work on this. |

Those safeguards you mentioned were dismantled from the middle of Clinton's second term (at least) right through Bush II's second term. It's those regulations that were keeping us, at least to some extent, protected. If you get a chance, have a look at that article I gave a link to. Also have a look at the Article that Denise posted the link to, which seems interesting as well, though not, as you might guess, quite up my alley. Get well very soon. Mr Bob. |
