Impaled on a Tragedy

I have been impaled
on the tragedy
of an old man
a gentleman of much tenacity
who in dapper verve
took brittle steps
two times a day
for his health

and because he liked
the look of his long life
from down the tree lined sidewalk
Crossing driveways
skirting skateboarders
smiling at the ladies
who’s dogs sniffed his trouser leg

Perhaps he smelled that
errant rose in my front yard
Oh, if only I had seen him pressed
and hunched there in fragrant bliss

Instead

I saw him toppled
that fragile stately gait
in agony
hit by a man who rearranged him
with his car
like a tin can crushed beneath
a tire
curtailed in his journey
across the sun dappled street

The driver hit and ran
with tires screeching
faster then the eye remembers
lost himself on all those highways
hid himself inside this awful truth

the old man died.

Oh, Martie, I hope this isn't true, but you sure make it sound true.
Great writing, as usual
Hope it's fiction

Oh so tragic....I too hope it's not a true story.....so sad.  Wonderful writing, of course, Martie!

Unfortunatley, it is true.  It happened last week, just up the street from our flower shop.

Martie-
I would cry if this were true.
Heck, I'm crying anyhow.
So vivid ..

How sad! They will probably never catch the jerk that did this! You're poem is so lyrical.... I could see the old gentleman. Wonderful poem!
