I wonder how you are Tonight by Miss Abagail Mannering I wonder how you are tonight, so very far away. Will the stars be your only light 'til dawn brings the new day? Do crickets disturb your slumber deep? Do dreams flit through your mind? Or do you lay in a crumpled heap in a place no one may find? I wonder how you are tonight, so very far away. Will lanterns be your only light 'til dawn brings the new day? Do wounds pain you overmuch? Do you bare your grief and cry? Or do you crave a gentle touch as you strain to see the sky? I wonder how you are tonight, so very far away. Will the dawn find your green eyes bright or lifeless, dull and grey? Do you think kind thoughts of days gone by? Do you gaze at the stars above? Or do you think me much too shy, incapable of love? (written march of 1997. inspired by a guy i was dating at the time. he had been admitted into the hospital in fort drum, new york, i hadn't heard from him in a long time, and didn't know what had happened to him.) |

Well, Abagail, I guess I'll be the first to ask, "What did happen to him?" and to both of you. Your peom is intriquing, romantic, and makes it hard to believe there's no follow-up. |

There's something about the rhythm of that last phrase, "incapable of love" that really caught my attention for some reason--it trips so easily off the tongue, lilts in fact, and yet the meaning is so radically different than what the sound would suggest! I enjoyed the rest of your poem as well, but "incapable of love" inspired me on an absolute tangent... ![]() |

he was admitted ot a hospital for broken legs...when i wrote this..i had just told him in i letter that i would go out with him..(he asked me long before that to 'go out' with him..but he was in the military, and i had known him before that, and to make a long story short...he had to prove himself to me because of what he had done to me in the past..) we split up a few months later, because though i loved him dearly, he was incapable of loving me and being true to me. Very intriguing poerty you write. Well done, sad do. This fact still lingers. The ability to describe life with words is similar to painting a picture; both can be powerful tools. |
