Who ever would have thought!
"Ahhh!"  The beauty that I've found.
Sitting in this stodgy mess
   Called "Divorce on UNcommon ground".

Ironic, one would think,
That on the darkest of all days,
In the coldest depths of my heart
Beam bright the warmest of sunrays.

It occured to me this instant.
The humor, it sets me free.
Amidst divorce's angry muse
   I've discovered a pleasantry.

My mom, she always said,
"This too, my child, shall pass".
But the wisdom and strength collected
Through divorce, I want to last.

Now I'll take this chance, to thank
My ex who helped me see
That through divorce's bitter battle
   I've become a better me.

Without divorce I'd never know
How it feels to sleep alone-
The pillows not placid with your drool,
   The sheets, all my own.

Without divorce I'd never know
What it is like to keep clean
The bathroom sink and toilet bowl
From hair and colors now unseen.

Without divorce I'd surely miss
What it's like to hear rain pouring
as it beats down on the rooftop,
   unmuffled by your snoring.

I can change the attic lightbulb.
I can change the filter too.
I can keep the lawn neatly trimmed...
All the things you used to do.

I can update the computer
And I can balance the books so well.
I can keep up with the oil changes
And I can answer all of the mail.

I can stay up late at night
   Without the t.v. on.
I can go to bed at 8 o'clock
and not worry where you've gone.

Not just the things from married life
   Are on my resume,
But what an education
This divorce has brought my way.

But mostly I have learned
And have grown enough to know
That through divorce I've found a me
Not worthy again of letting go.

Well, having been through it, I would have to agree...sometimes there are no options left and even something as devastating as divorce can have redeeming qualities and the wisdom taught won't soon be forgotten, that's for sure! Great poem, Sherry!

I have to agree with you! I'm also going through a divorce, and I'm finding all the little beauties that I stopped noticing before. I'm so thankful I'm finally able to see some light...

Thanks for the comments on this one!  What I failed to mention in my poem, is the education I'm so thankful to have, as a result of the divorce.  Amazing that you can grab so much good out of a situation that is stereotyped as so bad...I can now value real estate (as I had to do a market analysis on my own home for the court), I can appraise automobiles (as I also had to do for the court, on my own auto)...Kinko's has lived up to it's name, "office away from home", as I know how to operate all 12 of their copy machines, send overnite mails via 3 different carriers and their fax machine is more like a personal friend now!  Oh, and I can deal with plumbers and fight off sales calls now, and just painted the tree house outside, SOLO!  Marriage taught me bunches, but the lessons learned thru divorce are much more valuable (*EG*).

dsnyder:  redeeming qualities indeed!  Nice to see you come thru something a much better person than you remembered from before. Thanks.

tulip:  hang in there!  It's a long road, but if you keep that smile on your face, even when you would rather stomp your feet and jump up and down, things will fall into place in time.  I find "divorce" has been very freeing, in many more ways than one.  I wish more would write of the comical side of it, as we should all be reminded that there is always more than one view on a situation.  I prefer the giggly side, myself.

Hootowl:  ^5!  THAT is what I wanted to hear...a hearty laugh!  Thanks!

SnglDad:  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!  You, of all replies, KNOW how my heart has written this one.  Nice to share a JUAD with you once again.  I seem to lose me every now and then, but I'll try to "stay" in this frame of mind.

Saxoness:  ME TOO, now.  Smiles to you!

Peace to all~
Sherry
