yep, she has already begun, just in the past few minutes btw, it is barely 12:30 here, and the event began less than thirty minutes ago I happened to have 'captured' a shot of it via the webcam about 10 minutes into the eruption I got on the phone and called immediately to my daughter and friends, tho I didn't get to speak to Sara, I did get a friend on her cellphone They are in Auburn, WA I had insisted they take dust masks with them when they left to go to WA yesterday AM glad I did now there are several light planes that just took to the skies around here (just south of Portland) ...maybe they are monitoring the air quality, looking to see how far away the ashfall is blowing [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (10-01-2004 04:41 PM).] |

I've been in or seen hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes, but never have I seen a volcano. Much less seen one blowing its stack. Please keep us updated. |

for the time being, it looks as if she mildly 'burped' and there is no indication at this moment that another eruption will happen soon, but they'll keep monitoring sesmology reports Meanwhile, in Mt Rainier the sky is hazy looking, but that happens often and may have nothing to do with ash since it seems the winds are blowing southerly not northerly at this time *sigh* makes me feel good, as my daughter is near Mt Rainier today ALERT some airlines are already cancelling AK AIR has cancelled flights and PDX is now beginning to curtail flights all the crews that were on the mountain this morning, meanwhile, are OK as one geologist said...what a hoot! and as of now, 1:37PM, all seems quiet again, and the scientists are following up on the new data and pictures update of 3PM? seems as if Helens is snoozing  [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (10-01-2004 06:13 PM).] |

Kacy, It was either Vanity Fair or GQ, and I think the later, named St. Helens Ashhole of the year in 1981. Maybe she'll win again! I remember it well... Used to have gallons of that ash. Sorry I lost it as it was cool stuff. If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

Hey everyone, it was quite a sight yesterday. I was flying from California to washington right after Helen's Erupted. It looked pretty cool. I am headed to my friend Emily's funeral. It was an interesting flight... camera crews filming it was neat. But also very very scary. |

OK, so we are now at level 3.. geologists report we are now on "red alert" meaning add'l steam eruptions with ash is likely/imminent as of now... and the main threats now: for aircraft travel at this time, especially for flights in and around SEATAC and PDX if she blows again and for anyone with respiratory problems, breathing the ash the Johnson viewing center is now closed, all visitors were asked to leave immediately |

I'm in southwest Washington (about 40 minutes outside of Portland, Oregon) so I have a good view of it from here. Definitely no problem with ash being in the air here... but, from my sources (friends who actually went there to study it) they do say there's a chance of a full eruption. Not a big chance, but probably more then the news lets on. It's been 20 years, so it's got to soon. Most likely, though, we'll just have several small earthquakes and a few more small explosions. The good side? I get to watch the news at school instead of talk about politics! It'll be interesting to see what happens... He was a man of sorrows |

LOL, so it's a diversionary event? We are close then, as I am about 35 miles SW of Portland. My concern has been more for my daughter, who is at a horse show in Auburn and will be travelling this evening back to McMinnville, with a trailer and 4 horses, right past St Helens. I'm just hoping Helens doesn't throw a major fit today. Thanks for saying hi! |

I am flying out tonight, hopefully it doesnt do anything today because I don't want my plane cancelled or near it when it does errupt. I think they are way over-dramatizing it on the news. But we don't really know so.. good luck everyone. |

Have a safe and pleasant flight, Kellie. If she blows, you won't have any say so in the flight cancellations. Planes cannot fly safely through the ash, even car engines cannot perform as they should if ashfall is a problem. As for people and animals, breathing is more difficult IF in the fallout area. The media ALWAYS seems to overplay any disaster or potential disaster. But if they ignore it and something BIG happens? the public will scream loud and long that they weren't being kept informed. |
