Tell me, what is/was your ideal Christmas? Have you ever experienced it? |

To steal a phrase from Charles Dickens, “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times’. I was eleven with not a care in the world. Not quite an adult, I still longed for that one perfect doll for Christmas. My family was in distress though. My father was out of work, sick. At the time my sisters and brother and I were left in the dark about it all, we just knew that this Christmas would be pretty small. We never had much so we didn’t expect much. But Santa always had a way of making our lives a little bit better on Christmas morning. Since my father was out of work, he did things that he never did before. He came to a Christmas play at school. He came to a chorus recital where I got to sing with the high school kids. He made candy and decorated the house. And on Christmas Eve, his coworkers brought over huge boxes of toys and clothes and food. It was the first time I’d seen my father cry. That was the best Christmas. The next year, my dad was in the hospital, taken out of the house on a stretcher – the tree glowing in the corner of the room. And that was the worst Christmas. He died a few weeks later of leukemia – the day before my thirteenth birthday. But that one Christmas when he was home and well enough, he made our last real Christmas together the best I’ve ever had. I try every year to make the kind of memories for my own kids that they will write about someday, when someone asks them about their best Christmas ever.... |

The first Christmas I spend with my children now 8 and 7. Back then they were one and a half year old, the other 2 months. I still see the video to keep focused. Great question. |

My ideal Christmas is any Christmas spent with my families. Perhaps these days, there are small details i wish I could attend to better... like Christmas caroling...something I haven't done in years! Like be carried away every moment by the gentle flow of Christmas music. lol..which I'm working on because I get to listen to lots of it at work and there is a station here that plays it nonstop! Hmm...need more time for volunteering. Last year I worked at a nursing home around Christmas, and it was a truly wonderful experience to share the spirit of it all with those residents..those wonderful friends I made. I was just thinking how I haven't seen the Salvation Army people out in front of stores here . Weird. Have I just not paid attention? ..I hope not! I'm rambling..I'd just like to enjoy the season to its fullest if I can. Although I know it can't be picture perfect, I have faith that it can be filled with an array of wonderful memories and thoughts if I go out and make them happen or if I am open to them. I suppose none of these answers were what you were looking for, but here they are. Thanks for making me think. I am many. [This message has been edited by Siofra (edited 12-09-2001).] |

I've had several best Christmasii, and all of them have been when I really wasn't expecting anything from having been in a town a short time. And everytime, I've been surprised. I was in Oregon only 2 months, and Nicole gave me gifts for my apartment. I worked real hard not to cry. I was in Arizona 5 months, and Pat and her family had me over to her mother's for Christmas, and I got blown away again. Both Pat and Nicole made sure my birthday (23rd) was separate from Christmas (25th), days which were usually combined in my own family due to budget and memory. |

I feel inspired to share one of my best childhood memories with you all. I was with my Mom and stepdad, who I adore, and we went to Midnight Mass Christmas Eve. I was 10. We were in San Francisco. We were walking to church and I remember chattering away to my stepdad about Superman. I was very enthralled with superman at the time, and knew all the little details of his story. My stepdad played along wih me and acted like I was explaining something important to him. I never forgot that. And walking arm in arm with the two of them in the crisp, cool (NOT FREEZING) air, and just feeling totally happy. Short lived, as they seperated later that year, and we moved to NH, and everything went downhill. But I hold that memory so dear. Even after all these years. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday. My best Christmas would have been when my older uncles came over with their sons. I hadn't seen my cousins for years and it was like a mini family reunion...with the decent members of the family.
