Out of the terror and devastation come some good things. What are some of the 'good' things you've heard or read about lately? I think it's wonderful that we have a renewed sense of patriotism....flags are being purchased at record numbers. The donations to blood banks, food banks and charitable organizations is way up... We are all working together, even astonishingly enough, our politicians... They played 'The Star Spangled Banner' instead of the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.. Strangers are sharing rides and hotel rooms when the get stranded... |

Our school is having a fund raiser for those people in New York and Washington. It started today and we were looking at a goal of $6,200 after only one day when not everyone knew of it we have raised over $5,000, now that's encouraging, everyone gave, or was going to on Monday. My teacher told me a story of a class she has at the U. She goes there and there is an Egyptian Muslim and an Israeli in that class, and the Egyptian made a comment on how strong and wonderful our country was where she could be here without fear, where in her own country if an American were there that American would be detained. I see flags everywhere, so many people wore Red, White, and Blue today.. The 3 minutes of silence when Big Ben struck 12:00. |

A man in New York who survived the disaster - but had nowhere to go, because his apartment was too close to the towers... was touched by an angel... He was invited to stay in the home of a total stranger, whom he then encountered on the street... in the middle of NYC... where no one looks into the eyes of passers-by... My next door neighbor saw a woman from India(in her native dress) struggling to load her elderly mother out of a wheelchair into a van on a doctors building parking lot... she went over to help, after they got the woman in the van, my friend noticed the woman crying and when she thanked my neighbor, she said: "Bless you, all week we have been cursed at and even threatened." "Forgive me, but when I saw you approaching me, I was afraid you were going to do something mean." They hugged and cried together....... The Hallmark card stores here(and nation wide I think?) are selling t-shirts that say God Bless America with a flag... the cost $5..at their expense they are donating the entire cost to the Red Cross......they cannot keep them in stock. and on a more personal note...I have finally heard from my dear friend and his family whom were "missing"...hurt but still with us....and very grateful to be alive....as are we all. Sometimes we need to be shaken up to be more caring. I like the fact that the citizens of this country have pulled together...a little bit more caring......realizing that though we may not have had personal friends or relatives in New York or DC, we are all one....and we are all affected by this. God Bless America. |

I think hearing/seeing the Star Spangled Banner played at Buckinham Palace was an extremely emotional moment too.. the entire day we've seen images of people all over the world coming together to realize tuesday's tragedy was an attack on the human race... I don't think there's been a moment in the history of the planet when humanity has been more galvanized and realized that we have to share this space. I recieved an e-mail from a young man who wrote 'I never thought of getting up in the morning and going to work as patriotic' -- I had tried to tell him before how important his role was -- I think now if people are begining to realize how important thier contribution to civilization is -- then we can each see how important everyone is -- whether they dig ditches, broker investments, try lawsuits, tend bar, or write poetry -- Listening to Maya Angelou speak this evening with Ted Koppel was amazing -- every word that fell from her lips was rife with wisdom and poetry -- the true poet is the poetry -- she showed me that. |

I tried to attend a memorial service here in Ireland, and the church was packed. some parents left the service with their children before the service started out of fear of the church being so packed. THat show of community, to see how people, young and old, got together in prayer and reflection. i am not religious but it was a powerful gesture. ~A small supply store asking for donations of pillows, blankets, jackets, gloves, cots, etc...hoping to fill a semi...ending up filling 3 with supplies for all of the rescuers... ~Watching 800 k-8 children stay completely silent for 3 minutes, then sing "God Bless America"...in perfect harmony... ~Seeing a young boy going in to buy a candy bar and be asked to donate to the Red Cross on his way in the door, without hesitation he put all of his $10.00 in the jar... ~Seeing petty differences between friends disappear, and families holding each other just a little tighter...as we all realize how precious each minute is....... |

Today we got an email from our CEO. We could donate money to the Red Cross (the charity of choice - to which the company donated $100,000 already) or we could 'cash in' vacation hours....at our regular rate of pay, the amount of money for whatever hours donated would be sent to the Red Cross. Being low on cash, I opted for the vacation hours...it's a GREAT way to give!!! You should suggest it to your company!! |

I just don't want them yet to change from search and rescue to recovery  But it's really nice to see everyone get together and help each other. I heard residents around the trade center wake up early in the morning and make sure the voluteers have breakfast and coffee every morning. ~One of the radio stations here in Detroit cancelled an upcoming giveaway, and will donate the entire $100,000 from the contest to help the victims' families. ~A friend of mine who lost her brother-in-law on the USS Cole has a huge flag draped over her porch. If anyone should be sad and angry and hopeless she should, and yet and still she has it in her to show support. PEACE and LOVE |

A town here has manufactured special helmets that will be sent to the FBI to wear as they investigate the ruins of the towers.. My university held a peace vigil a couple of nights ago in the park bordering the campus - sadly, I was unable to attend... reading about the countless memorial services all over the place...packed to bursting... You're right Marge - I was touched by all those photos of solidarity...there's some wonderful stories here...last night I saw on the news an item about a small town in Montana, I think, where the children of a school that has only 25 or so pupils gave a message of hope to other school children around America...telling them not to worry for their parents, and to not be afraid..it was just beautiful...
