i think freestyle rap is an intense form of poetry. i practice it alot, and sometimes it's very hard to do. however, with practice comes mastery. what an art to master, that of the spoken (and written)word. i dont expect many to relate to freestyle rap. after all, it is mostly an "underground" artform. and its majority of artist are minority(?), but would anyone agree that freestyle rap is a form of poetry, an art? ~DC~ |

It's absolutely a form of poetry. Why wouldn't it be? |

It is actually an evolution of the oldest form of poetry--oral tradition. Before we started writing stuff down, we would make up songs that rhymed, easier to remember, yanno? Check it out, DC. Interesting stuff. |

There's a lot of poetry I've read that I wasn't fond of. That didn't make it any less a poem ... Serenity is right ... "rapping" is still fairly common in native African music, particularly the oral histories. Those singer/rappers are some of the most highly respected persons in their societies - they are the guardians of the past, which is the realm of the sacred ancestors. |

It's good and it's highly effective, but it's hardly new enough to be called "underground".... Rap is at least as old as recorded poetry in this language....Read Beowulf aloud and you'll see what I mean. Yep, the oldest poem written down in anything resembling English, is a rap. ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |

hehehe... Beowulf aloud, eh? ![]() I read Nietzsche aloud, but that's just because if I didn't, I'd never remember anything. |

If you have Realplayer, here's a site that offers audio selections from Beowulf: http://www.wwnorton.com/nael/noa/audio.htm#beowulf (and oh boy, I found something new to play with! gleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee) ![]() |
