With all the favourite polls over the past few days,
I thought I might as well join in the discussion.

I have this strange habit when I am depressed
of listening to the most depressing music I can find
I am wondering if anyone out there does this and if so what is their depressing favourite album or song.

I have to go for the classic. Joy Division
(as a friend of mine says the hints in the name)
and their album "closer".

The music sounds similar to the Cure's darker moments compressed in a claustraphobic and icy production.
Its a haunting landscape to slip into. The last four songs, especially the song "the eternal" never fail to send shivers down my spine.

"My view stretches out from the fence to the wall
No words could explain, no actions determine
Just watching the trees and the leaves as they fall"
(ian Curtis)

Somehow, it can be a strangely therapeutic listen.

For my less serious misery moments Nick cave or leonard cohen will do.

I know there are a lot of songs out there that I listen to, but right now I can't think of them.  The only one I can think of right now is Nickle Creek The Lighthouse tale.  When I feel sad and in a mushy mood I put that song on and tears just run down my cheeks.  Or Aerosmith Janie's got a Gun.

Anyway, more later when my brain isn't so fried.

love them smilies..

Oooo I love depressing music. Happy crap certainly does nothing but make my mood worse.

Lets see. "Hurt" - NIN, "Angel" - Sarah Mclachlan, "Never is a promise" - Fiona Apple, "Coma white" "Count to six and die" "Coma Black" "Lamb of God" - Manson.

There are so many more but I can't be bothered typing them all. Just know that my CD collection is comprised mainly of depressing music.

ah...mood music.

It very much depends on what it is I am miserable ABOUT.

And I'm so old? grinning...I fear my choices would bore you to tears.

But I will confide, that after the death of my father? There is one song, that I do, play over and over when that "missinghim" hurt is very bad.

By Ricki Lee Jones:

Company

I'll remember you too clearly
But I'll survive another day
Conversations to share
When there's no one there
I'll imagine what you'd say

I'll see you in another life now, baby
I'll free you in my dreams
But when I reach across the galaxy
I will miss your company

Company
I'll be looking for company
Look and listen
Through the years
Someday you may hear me
Still crying for company

So now you're going off to live your life
You say we'll meet each other now and then
But we'll never be the same
And I know I'll never have this chance again
No, not like you

So, I'll see you in another life now baby,
I'll free you in my dreams
But when I reach across the galaxy
I will miss your company

Company
I'll be looking for company
Look and listen
Through the years
Someday you may hear me
Still crying for company

Hollow Hills by Bauhaus is pretty damn depressing.

Actually, a lot of the music I listen to is pretty depressing: Bauhaus, The Cure, Joy Division/New Order, Radiohead.

But it's not "boo hoo" sad. Just "acceptance" sad.

Then there's those songs that give me a pang of regret or general sadness, like Drive by the Cars, Topaz by the B-52s, Caroline No by the Beach Boys, Loomer by My Bloody Valentine, Tonight Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins, Bloody Kisses (A Death in the Family) by Type O Negative, I'll Fall With Your Knife by Peter Murphy, Pyramid Song/Fade Out [Street Spirit]/Exit Music For a Film by Radiohead, Vow and Special by Garbage ...

I will stop here.

Miah, don't know nickle creek? any relation to nickleback? lol

Anon, have some manson myself, sounds like your a fan of the new album. IT never grew on me. I used to listen Antichrist all the time, I kind of loss interest when Manson
canclled a gig that he was to play here because the company that were supposed to film the concert pulled out. Even if it wasn't been filmed he should have still performed.

Karen,
Ricki Lee Jones???? sounds like the love child of Jenny Jones and Ricki Lake. Never heard of him, I like the lyrics though.

Mike, I haven't heard that Bauhaus song.
New order aren't really depressing, are they? Bernard Sumner is no Ian Curtis.
Twenty Four Hours  Ian Curtis.

"Excessive flashpoints - beyond all reach
Solitary demands for all I'd like to keep
Let's take a ride out - see what we can find
A valueless collection of hopes and past desires"

How about "How to completely disappear" by
Radiohead, that makes me want to bawl like a babe.

Actually Radiohead are probably the band I listen to most when I am a bit down and feel the need of some music to match my mood.

I saw that you were a Leonard Cohen fan. my dad is always playing his stuff, I describe it as 'music to top yourself to', it is so depressing!

anya, whether you meant to or not. You just made me feel old. Leonard Cohen, can be quite uplifting. Take a listen to "So long Marianne" , "hey that's so way to say goodbye" or "Suzanne". They are pretty uplifting, well compared to some of his other songs. Dress rehersal rag or avalance, now they are depressing songs.

it's just the shadow, shadow of my wound."

Nope no relations to nickleback.  I thought the same thing the first time my friend told me about the song.

sorry if I made you feel old, I am made to feel old all the time and I am 17, everyone seems to be expecting me to act all grown-up now! Hell save me chair as well!

Ah, you’ve hit on a specialty of mine here. Putting on some old albums (yes, the real old vinyl stuff!! Lol) and feeling maudlin, just cause I feel like it!! Okay, a couple of my fav’s (and they change to suit the mood)

The Chameleons….a mix of tracks from a few albums….Silence Sea and Sky, Swamp Thing, Up the Down Escalator, P.S. Goodbye,  and Tears.
Psychadelic Furs….Heaven, Ghost in You, Sister Europe, President Gas, My Time
The Pogues….Lorelei, and Song of New York, I’m a Man You Don’t Meet Everday
Simple Minds…Life in a Day, Chelsea Girl, Waterfront, Changeling, Miracle, Someone Someday in Summertime,
Echo and the Bunneymen…The Cutter, Bring on the Dancing Horses,
Modern English….Ricochet Days
Ian Hunter….Standing in my Light (blew my speakers on this one!!)
Joe Jackson…Slow Song,  Breaking Us in Two, Real Men
Everything But the Girl…Come on Home, Country Mile
Simply Red….Holding Back the Years
The Assembly/Feargal Sharkey…Never Never
Depeche Mode…Somebody
Peter Murphy….The Light Pours Out of Me

Oops, sorry, I don’t seem to have been able to stop at just one or two!! All of these are best at very loud volume, with a beer or two and a few cigarettes!!! There’s many, many more, but I think I’ve taken up enough space now!!

I think Ian destroyed himself
from being unable to see the light.

Listen to "Your Silent Face"
followed by "Temptation"
followed by "Love Vigilantes."

New Order is Joy Division,
dressed up in lights.

The subtlety, you see,
making it that much more dark.

And the best Joy Division song, by far?
Atmosphere,
followed by Transmission.

I love knowing others know and like these groups.

Tracey, I only know about two of those songs. The pogues "Fairytale" is a classic.

Kamla.. I am shocked, You like Travis??? easy listening indie. I'll admit "sing" is a good song.

Mike, I just finished reading "Touching from a distance" by Deborah Curtis, it details her marriage with Ian. It is a less than flattering portrait. The man said in his teens that he was going to be a rock star and kill himself in his early 20's. He did both. New Order is too dance oriented for me, I like Blue Monday and parts of the last album. Also Barney’s lyrics are not as poetic as Ian’s. Anyway not going to argue the point, to me they are two separate bands who were highly influential in their own right.

I love “Transmission” and “the sound of music” which is a very under rated song, also "new dawn fades" hey they all great.

I am surprised how many people don’t know of Joy Division, those who do know how important they were as a band.
Everyone from Smashing Pumpkins to Radiohead has cited them as an influence.

Moon Dust, I always found Kelly Jones’ voice grating, then again I used to like Placebo. So I can’t say anything.

Miah- Is Nickle Creek good? I've been kinda curious about them...

bsquirrel- Uh... I don't really think the Cure is that depressing- I mean yeah, I guess if you're going to listen to like, A Letter To Elise on loop they are, but for the most part, I think their songs sound too upbeat to be depressing- I mean, I always smile when I hear "Catch" or "Doing the Unstuck"... those songs are just so much fun...

For me, it's the Counting Crows- I can only think of a couple of songs by them that actually cheer me up... Hangin' Around and Mercury are about it, and that's mostly because of the upbeat sound- the lyrics alone are still so sad.

NIN can still do it sometimes- mostly with the instrumentals... I absolutely cannot listen to A Warm Place or Just Like You Imagined without feeling terribly melancholy or desperate (respectively).

Marylin Manson don't cut it for me no more- as I've gotten older, I've come to consider him commercial Goth crap. Oh yeah, he cancelled a concert here, too- word was, he was too wasted to get out of his tour bus and didn't deem the crowd big enough to be worth it. He cancelled it about half-hour before it was supposed to start, too.

Some Ani DiFranco songs really get me- Soft Shoulder, Hello Birmingham, Subdivision, Fire Door, Both Hands, Two Little Girls, and A Light of Some Kind all get me down...

    I'll only stand here'

The only song I can listen to when I'm down is Throbbing Gristle's "Weeping."  And when I'm not down, that song completely sucks.

But when I'm really feeling crappy... it's this song that I listen to... and it's the best song in the world.

I guess it just goes to show why TG was once even popular...

And I was remiss to leave off Oasis. When Live Forever plays, I can still smell the rain outside my old dorm room, a million years ago. *sigh*

I have The cure's first singles collection, I will have to get those albums you suggested. I hear pornography is supposed to be good. SO when I get some money or if when my currents mpg downloads are finished I'll get those songs.

Yep, I need that one, bri! I have the Preston gig, and that one is darkly amazing.
(Shadowplay tears the roof off my head)

And the Cure are a great band to get into; good luck leavin' 'em.

Seventeen Seconds is a chill interspersed with warmth.

Faith is a mountain with fog and graves and around it.

Pornography is two lovers being slashed by the rain and lights.

Beautiful stuff.

I most definitely don't have ONE fave misery song or album.... I'm a very troubled li'l grrl. When extremely sad, I always listen to either extremely sad or extremely angry music. If it can't make me cry more, or turn my sadness into anger, it's just going to make me feel worse and so frustrated. I'm weird, I understand.

I've got this weird thing where Marilyn Manson's two darkest albums (Antichrist Superstar and Holy Wood) find their way into my CD player when I'm most desperately sad. Nine Inch Nails' Downward Spiral or Fragile make it in when I'm achingly sad. The Cure's Pornography and Top are good for when I'm already a miserable mass on the floor. And give me something like Econoline Crush's Devil You Know, Tea Party's Transmission, Stabbing Westward's Darkest Days, and 30 Seconds to Mars' debut album for bad moods that I'm not entirely sure what they are.

I've even made musical compilations for when I hit these moods, ranging from Bif Naked's My Whole Life to Mesh's People Like Me (With This Gun).

My thought is that all this is better than taking medication.

I used to have theme songs for my moods. lol It's like as soon as I'd hit a mood my theme song would come on. For a long time it was "Full of Grace" by Sarah McLachlan. The lyrics aren't necessarily on-your-knees-crying-out-for-nonexistent-angels, but the song itself sounded... sigh.

"I haven't seen the sun for weeks/too long, too far from home/I feel just like I'm sinking/and I claw for solid ground/I'm pulled down by the undertow/I never thought I could feel so low/oh darkness I feel like letting go"

It's just of.. holding on by a string.. not to hope, but to survival.. and doing what you know you have to do. Yeah, my little theme song.

Sanity is in itself enough to make you insane.
