Lets see the first that comes to mind is ..... BattleField Earth.... book L. Ron Hubbert great book. John Travolta ruined it as a movie... did he even read this book. (don't get me wrong I like his acting) but stay away from directing. It should have been done by Steven Spielsburg. Parker |

I loved the book Tommyknockers........wow........and they did a tv movie for it and wow did they EVER screw up the ending.......really made me angry.  SEA |

Er I have to reverse this quite honestly... I saw 'The Power Of One' first...I couldn't even FINISH the book (Bryce Courtney).. Wonder what would've happened if I had the read the book first.  K |

I'd have to agree with Sea. Tommyknockers was ruined at the end. Another one I've read was Circle Of Friends and the ending in the movie just sucked. I don't like it when they change it to suit themselves. Dee I wish you every happiness and may you always have the best of the good things in life. a brand |

The Stand - loved the book (I've read it many times) hated the TV movie It - the book scared me up to the revelation of the monster - the TV movie bored me. |

The Lost World (sequel to Jurassic Park) The book was really good when I read it a few years back.... and then I heard the movie was being made. the movie had NOTHING to do with the book, and was horrible. So many people were turned off of reading the book because the movie sucked. But they are actually two ENTIRELY different stories. So go read that book. hehe  ~Allan If I had your eyes, I'd be blind. "The Winds of War" and its sequel, "War and Remembrance", by Herman Wouk. I don't think any movie has ever really lived up to the books I have read first. The characters we create in our minds as we read from the written page, are as individually unique in character as ourselves. They cannot be duplicated elsewhere. This is the phenomenon of the written word. The creative manifestation of human thought through imagination. "The poet is the priest of the invisible." |

I have to agree that movies made from books you read first almost never live up to your expectations. I do have one movie I saw first that was better than the book I read afterward, and that is First Wives Club. As for movies that do not live up to the books, I know there are several, but a couple spring readily to mind: Anne of Green Gables - There is an old black and white version out there that is absolutely horrendous. The TV series was better, but the sequel they made was awful, took several books from the series and mashed them together, and totally changed L. M. Montgomery's story around, even adding characters or re-naming them. The Secret of NIMH (originally Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH) - Sometimes turning books, even children's books, into animated features for children sugar-coats them beyond recognition. My daughter has the same quarrel with The Little Mermaid. There are certainly others, and I agree with several of those mentioned above. Don't you hate that??? To love another person is to see the face of God. |

I'll second you on Relic, Chris... that was a great book, and a horrible movie. The author... there were two of them. Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. It was a great book. I haven't read the sequel.... is it any good? If I had your eyes, I'd be blind. For I can only see out of my own. ~~Carly Van Dort |

KISS THE GIRLS by James Patterson...movies leave out SO much of the visual elements an authors words elicit...its all action action action...and even tho this movie had Morgan Freeman in it...it just could even come close to the book |

Dune was horrible. My husband still insists I need to read the book to better appreciate the movie, but I had to endure both the old and the recent versions of Dune, and I could barely stand it. Hubby loves it though. (blah!) With the word, I am mighty, with the pen I am free.. |

i'm a little late on this, but found it all the same...lol the movie "the prince of tides" sucked...but pat conroy wrote an awesome book we missed out on a great nude motorcycle scene in the movie "rambo" also..lol bummer THAT! but other than that, the movie and the book were both great gotta love ole sly!hugs, g |

One that came to mind for me was SCARLET, (the sequal to Gone with the Wind). Of course the sequal written didn't compare to Gone with the Wind, but I have to say that it was TONS better than the made for TV movie with Joann Whaley Kilmer as Scarlet. Come on people! She didn't compare to who Scarlet should have been! THey should have at LEAST gotten Delta Burke to play her, that may of helped some. My sister my Mother and I were so dissapointed.
