In the sky,
the pink was rising into the blue -
he was walking the tracks again,
drinking a beer,
flicking his butts in the ditch,
head down, watching the ties.

He knows what draws him there,
instead of sidewalks or streets;
when his daddy left them,
he'd taken a train -
but he couldn't figure out
what the hell he expected to happen -
Daddy sure wasn't gonna come riding by one day,
it was twenty-two years ago now;
he doesn't even remember him leaving,
since he'd been only one and a half then;
all he knows is Momma told him
that Daddy left one night on a train,
and now, when he walks, he always
takes the tracks.
