The earthen slick-wet ring of dirt surrounds And darkens the sterile white drain on the Floor, telling unclean stories and dirty Jokes. The one left-of-center lump is hair; The rest less direct: A silent riddle. Chester Jenkins may have tracked this dirt here, Unaware of its presence on his Nike Flip-Flops. They collected dust and years and So did his arteries (his doctor said). “Start swimming or die,” his doctor had said. This one patch shaped kind of like Australia May indeed have been the work of Susan, From Long Island. Sleepin-Around Susan Is what they had called her in high school, but Her six kids allowed little time for that. And this one blade of grass, noticeable To most who would track it around, may have Hailed from Private Maxwell’s Timberland boots. The War in the Gulf had been a breeze, but Nothing seemed the same in the States these days. Specks of soil, a bit darker than the Rest, may have belonged to Ellen. She Took my heart before I knew I was old Enough to give it, so if you see her Around, would you tell her I’m still dying? And now the bit that looked like Australia Is slipping into and curling around Old Chester’s brown legacy, and Ellen’s Specks are suddenly everywhere, and I’ve just tread by and joined the reunion. |
