The old house rose up dank and grey Sad and wanting like the day I made my way toward the muted light I had been travelling oh so……... long I’d forgotten…. right from wrong I just sought a place to lie that night I stumbled through the glistening mist Made it round the final twist Came upon the flaky broke down door This looked like a place from hell As I reached and pressed the bell And then a thin enquiring face I saw ‘What do you want?’ came the chide Behind the door he seemed to hide His voice was sort of twisted, just a wine But as he was now standing there With shallow features and wispy hair I thought his visage was a lot like mine ‘I’m very weary I thought I might Get some rest here for the night’ I responded with a quiver in my voice ‘Then you’d better come inside’ He dropped his arm down by his side I knew now this was not a place of choice ‘I have a spare room at the back The bed’s not much it’s just a sack’ He said it with a darkness in his eye ‘But you are quite welcome here Now drink this glass have some cheer A wine from heaven my wanting it did ply The atmosphere within this place Was clinging now around my face The dampness there was choking dark and thick The passage that led up to my room Was likened to a catacomb As his withered hand at the rusty lock did pick I entered the forsaken room As if I’d stepped into my tomb I was now cold and my conscience was disturbed I lay down on the rickety bed The wine was working on my head And the effects of this my apprehension curbed The mirror hanging on the wall Was ancient, golden, chipped and tall And from its glass there shone a greyish hue I looked at my reflection there My sunken face my unkempt hair Who was I now? A conclusion never drew I drifted into troubled sleep And in my mind strange thoughts did creep Then awkwardly I found myself awake Before the mirror I now stood And what I saw it wasn’t good The surface with a swirling light did…. seep I put my hand against the glass And through it now my arm did pass I couldn’t believe what was happening to me now As through the mirror I did walk I couldn’t breath I couldn’t talk I stood shaking on the other side ……but how? The realms of reason fled my mind I was in a world but of what kind I turned around and through the mirror gazed Back into myself…my saddened life Reflections of my children…wife All the wrong that I had done was… crazed In the room the scene went past All the wrong and who I’d…. cast Away from me in my arrogant greed It was so frightening… stark to see All this bad inside of me Please won’t love come and set it’s seed I fell down and clasped my head How I wished that I were dead I couldn’t stand this picture in my eye I’d become just what I’d hate There was no way to heavens gate Oh it would be a blessing now to die A shivering wreck was when I woke The sack around me like a cloak A shaft of sunlight played upon the door You can’t imagine the relief in me When standing now in front of me The housekeeper stooping there once more He quietly stood he never spoke He quickly handed me my coat In his glance a knowing in his eye This troubled place I want no more I slipped out and closed the door And all that morning all I asked was why? My life as changed a lot since then A different person I am when I think of it it makes my senses reel It was a blessing from above My life is now packed with love You can’t believe the happiness I feel The housekeeper his face like mine The mirror ……the releasing wine It all makes sense as with my glass I toast I’ll always thank him in my prayers And for that night I climbed the stairs And spent a night with my fathers… ghost Jon Mewett Been down one of those lanes again. As usual I am enthralled by your words Jon. Storyman extraordinaire. May your roof never fall in and those beneath it never fall out. Irish proverb. |

Jon, In reading this, you did succeed in making me cry. I'm struggling with a delima in which my father plays an important role.. I think by the time I read your work for the seventh or eightth ((yep, it's true. I like it that much)) time I figured out what I will do. Thankyou for your help. *winks* However unwittingly it may have been given. Wonderful, wonderful work of art. I shall keep my eyes open for more. MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU, MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK MAY THE SUN SHINE UPON YOUR FACE THE RAINS FALL SOFT UPON YOUR FIELDS AND, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND Irish Blessing |
