NOW THEY CALL HIM LEFTY He came out of the hills of east Texas, tall and rawboned, Hard work and hard times, was how his character was honed. He left that hot, humid place, said he just couldn't take it anymore, He'd gotten caught up in America, he was joining the Corps. It was 1948, the big war was over, but tales of Iwo still filled his head, For to a young man of this time, his heros lay there, among the dead. Back then we really did have heros, it wasn't like today, Where people are looked up to, because they have it all, they can pay. A good Christian home had left him with a strong sense of what was right, He didn't know then, but that belief would take him through his toughest fight. For it seems that for every generation, there is a war, In 1950 H.R. found one, He was on the island of Midway, when the war in Korea begun. It was August, hot like east Texas,The brigade of Marines were going to be put to the test, It was called "no name ridge" It had to be taken, he went up with all the rest. It was one of the bloodest battles of the war, a lot of Marines died to take that place, The carnage that was made that day, was a disgrace to the human race. To those that fought there, if you called them heros today, they would only scoff, As for H.R., he would remember it as the day they blew his right arm off. There is a lot more to his story, mabe I'll tell it someday, when I am wiser and more crafty, But for now I will leave it as is, I have to write a letter to my friend Lefty. bill bussey 2000 |

Your poems are NEEDED. They are an inspiration to us all. They speak of honor, of duty fulfilled, of values that are sadly lacking in much of America today. I cannot presume to speak to you of duty; but I think many of the people you write about would say that it's your duty to continue to tell their story, the living and the dead. I salute you, for your efforts in uniform and for your contributions here, and will look forward to many more such poems. Exile |
