When The Problem is Really Over She had been a senior, but only seventeen, and senior night was to be her come-true dream, a time of wishes, fantasy, fairytales come true “Days of Wine, and Roses…and you.” She in truth didn’t appreciate then she’d be faced with problems when she took her first cool, illegal sip that all of life’s resolutions should slip. At first the calming lure of the wine was held at bay, she was in control and fine; no real problems, although a divorce stemmed from alcohol, his problem, not hers, of course. She abhorred greatly drunks and winos ~ she purchased her drinks with social grace; she never really saw the mirror’s reflection when she held it up close to her face. When she saw cheerless advertisements, of drivers weaving, driving drunk she knew when she was behind the wheel she was fine, but watched out for the other drunks. As she grew older and more into reflection she silently admitted she might have an addiction, but it was her life, by God, and life’s demands softened in the evenings with a drink in her hand. Of course arguments reigned, money was tight, each drink led to disagreements every night; and as she would lay in her drunken state, her mind would think “tomorrow’s not too late… ……for I should stop this endless ride, of feeling ashamed, that I should hide my problems from all, why everyone knows; it’s up to me, out the wine I should throw.” It was not easy, she did it mostly alone, for the miserable destruction of others lives, she would atone, and she took it slow, one day at a time flinging herself into real life, and away from the life of wine. Little things she gladly discovered first, as in that all of her insecurities passed, other things with her children grew better yet, and all of her relationships would now last; Her whole inner self and physical being seemed to gain a brighter perspective, and now she knew her thoughts were clear when she would wax reflective. Well, a long thirty years of drinking wine unbelievably, Thank God, left a resolve so fine that when she then kicked her habits, she kicked well, thanks be to God, she was left with this tale to tell. 10 January, 2000 ©KRJ Sunshine Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

This is a compelling piece of addiction and Victory over it.....I applaud the character for her strength and I applaud you Sunshine for such an affecting and well written poem... A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire! Shannon |

Unfortunatly, not all additions have such a happy ending. Most end with much pain sorrow and grief not only for the addict but also those around them! Kelly I love the male body, it's better designed than the male mind.---Andrea Newman |

Yes, not all addictions end well. I'm glad this did though. I think everyone deserves a happy ending if they want it to be! JOY |

Thank you all for your comments. One thing I've learned through life, is that you really have to WANT to be...with anything. Good endings CAN happen. So while we all occasionally lift a toast, do remember that when someone says they would rather not imbibe, there should be no pressure attached. To all my good friends who have come through this particular dark valley, cheers in good health. Hugs, Sunshine Sunshine Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

As the person who drives alot of the time, it has become easier and easier not to drink. You lose the desired to. It is also funny as hell to watch others get drunk off their ass Kelly I love the male body, it's better designed than the male mind.---Andrea Newman |

I'm glad someone found a happy ending to an otherwise terrible road.... MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU, MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK MAY THE SUN SHINE UPON YOUR FACE THE RAINS FALL SOFT UPON YOUR FIELDS AND, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND Irish Blessing |

Well, I am glad that the someone in your poem wanted it badly enough to be able to kick the habit. Great poem. Love and hugs, Lizzie "Poetry is the true expression of my soul, it is my ultimate means of communication. It is my rainbow of delight." |

A super cautionary tale with an unusual happy ending. I liked it very much. May your roof never fall in and those beneath it never fall out. Irish proverb. |
