( To Eat with Trilliums fresh, rich cream) It was a sunny summer day, When Mama said, "All toys away; Time to go and search the prairie For that elusive wild strawberry. My big brothers found some cans. And I used one of Mother's pans. Little sister fetched her pail. The Easter one, that had a bail. Those small berries were hard to find, But it was fun, we didn't mind. We all were thinking of that pie, Mama would bake us by and by. When Charlie asked small sister Glad, The number of berries she now had, She answered quickly "One or nine", And smiled as if that was just fine. Redwinged blackbirds were mad as hops; At our raiding of their berry crops. They swooped at us as if to say, "Greedy intruders, go away." Little shade in the summer meadow And I was tired, quite ready to go. When a brother said "Well that's enough. Wild berry picking's mighty tough." We had full pails,'cept sister Glad. Who'd greedily eaten all she had. We were so ready for that pie, And no one hungrier than I. I told our mother, "I'ts not fair, For my sister to have any share." She shushed at me and said, "It's fine." And cut Glady's piece as big as mine. By: Joyce 04/03/2001 I told |

I think I must have been Glad. I could never come back with any either LOL. Great poem. Reminded me a lot of my early childhood. How can you save me? |

Dear Joyce: This is charming! I too used to go pick wild strawberries, but since I was raised in northern Canada, we picked in the muskegs. I've never tasted berries like those anywhere else. I loved this! Betty Lou Hebert |

Wild strawberries are always special. We used to enjoy them mightily as kids, even though we had a large patch of cultivated ones in our garden (also very good). Thanks for sweet memories! To love another person is to see the face of God. |

Made me smile... thanks for the really sweet tale... reminds me of being seven and picking rasberries that grew between my grandparent's and their neighbor's yards... the old man there said I could have all I wanted, just as long as they were on our side of the fence. If I recall right... that fence didn't stop me. Again, a great story. Peace to you and yours. |
