Beside the river in the sun, the farmhouse basks. It's day is done. No longer does a rooster crow at break of dawn, to let folks know it's time to rise and start the chores that are waiting out of doors. Now all the signs of life I see, are blackbirds in a willow tree and pigeons, perching on the roof that one time sheltered hide and hoof. A cricket chirps, a flicker calls. An autumn colored, stray leaf falls. A breeze rises and it passes, causing whispers in the grasses. The spring, choked with water sedges, watercress around it's edges, presents a gurgling, liquid air while it's wandering off somewhere and there's the sleepy drone of bees, collecting nectar as they please. The old veranda beckons me to come and sit and I can see, what it was like when children played. Though many futile dreams were made, still, this was once a happy place and even time cannot erase the vestiges of yesterday, before the owners moved away. Betty Lou Hebert |

Trillium, WOW this is superb writing, loved the imagery and the flow not really familiar with meter but to me it read perfectly. the words danced upon the lines. Loved it! into my library it goes Maree |

Betty Lou - this is a marvellous picture...like looking through an old photo album... You've captured the essence of a gentle time, with nature's beauty... and the world at peace. A breath of fresh air! Thanks! Lary |

Dear Maree: Thank you for your nice comments and for putting this poem in your library. This farm is a place I used to go, when I wanted to be alone and "think". It was newly abandoned when I first saw it, but as the years went by, nature gradually took it over. It was a special place to me. |

Dear Lary: Thank you so much for your comments. I was born and rasied in Alberta and this farm I am writing about was near Wainwright, Alberta. A favorite retreat. Betty Lou Hebert |
