The darkness is like a cover, seemingly to hide the ugleness of day, But instead of comfort, it brings uncertainty and fear, some say. It is not strange that we feel this way, for the blackness of the night, Hides from us the sights we need to see, to show us all is right. Why do we fear the blackness? is it an unconscious fear of death? The sounds of the night are different, some will cause quickness of breath, The man in a foxhole, he knows this feeling so well, he hates the night, Though it covers him and gives him comfort, it also magnifies his plight. The simple rustle of leaves means more than that to him, is it near? The sound of death comes in many forms, it is wise to fear. Though it is unsettling, it is a survival instinct, it brings senses high, Self preservation, this is the common bond between you and I. It sometimes takes years to chase the night demons from a mind, The toll war takes on a man is found in many forms, all unkind. But the fear of the blackness of night is the one I have to fight, It has been half a century, and I still find comfort in the days light. Will this burden ever lift? I think not, but I have made my peace, I accept the fact that the unsettling sounds of night will never cease. I remember times when the night seemed to never end, yet it always did, With morning light I saw all those fears that the darkness had hid. So I take comfort that, as in the past, these nights will surely go, And now when I wake and look about, I"ll see things I know. No longer do I have to fear another mans desire to take my life, I now can wake and see, can feel the warmth, of my sleeping wife. |

this is a great piece..the fear of the unknown, especially in harm's way, can be overwhelming. I am glad to hear that you have come to an understanding with your personal demons. some never do. peace, my brother in arms. the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

I like this, especially the last stanza. I have never been in a war, but do prefer light to darkness. I think perhaps it is something that is born in us, perhaps a yearning for a greater light. Anyway, this was a nice exploration of your feelings and the reasons for them. Thanks for sharing it. To love another person is to see the face of God. - Les Miserables Marilyn |

much wisdom here, so lovely that you have comfort and solace in your beloved. I have chosen the Light of the world, He dispels all darkness and fear. A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails. |
