In these valleys now so green,
     once ran fearful red-river dreams.

Lost in the gray mists of dark time,
a silent sentinel paces quiet rhyme.

How honorably he stands steadfast,
throughout the seasons so long past.

Fallen comrades now surely dream,
under eyes that never left the scene.

So forsworn and forevermore,
a charge to the annuals of war

Solemn footfalls of the sentinel still,
quiet cadence whispers in the hills.

At the end of each endless pass,
his first bony salute is the last.

"Come...dance with me, into my world of words."

Wordancer you are so eloquent, this poem is a reminder for us all..Ellie

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

when the dogs of war are finally silent, the lonely sentinal remains..great piece my friend..

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

...the dogs of war are never silent, they only sleep an uneasy rest...to run and chase us in our dreams, until the next time for them to bay at the moon..
