The canopy of clouds progress
from cordial greys toward
deeper sullen even
angry hues.
The polite breeze whose soft
and benign speech
was hardly noticed by any
only minutes prior
augments her whisperings
until the top boughs
in the sylvan wood
arc with bows
as if to give by solemn sway
acknowledgement
to the coming wash.
And now my ears
also hear.
With irises premature
I too perceive lashing sheets
striking the earth
with wonderful torrents.
I feel with my skin the stumble
and fall of at least ten
or twelve degrees.
By these senses I detect
a mighty shower
due from skies
about to rend.
Yet if  these mentioned above
were to be taken from me.
If blind and deaf and calloused
to touch,
I would still understand
what was coming.
Somewhere wafting in the air
beginning from far places
from who knows where
are long and swirling trails
of scent entwined
with the breezes that precede
advancing rains.
I guess for something
that is quite beyond description
I would have to say it's like
the smell of glorious travels,
ancient expeditions,
high adventures.
through the nostrils
one may catch
the comixed fragrances
of everywhere the rain
has been
in ages
gone before.
She has washed the many nations.
The prosperity of crops
thankful to their creator
for his waters
also adds an element
to this strange
and holy smell.
I too give thanks to him
for the aroma that pervades
the air and prophesies
the coming rain.

what an interesting concept..totally intriguing that the rain has seen so many things in it's endless cycle..

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

This is a lovely descriptive read!  I was captivated by it from beginning to end.  Thanks for posting it.

This is my favorite scent in all the world and this poem describing it is most eloquent and incredibly beautiful! Ellie
