A cliff overlooks the city
out to the Long Island Sound,
as it stands chained to the land.

Inside I am a bird
that yearns to fly free;
outside pure desire
with clipped wings.

To soar, as in long ago dreams;
tree top to tree top,
rustle of green leaves
soothing breeze.
Straight up
into the crystal firmament
to dance with the scream
of the eagle’s wings;
Sun motes—blinded eyes.

Now, as I stand immobile
chained on edge, a
shadowed ridge of reality,
my shoulders ache
with the need to fly. . .free.

"Come...dance with me, into my world of words."

This is a very good read, Wordancer, and a thinker. There are a lot of things in life to keep us from spreading our wings.  Although the style is different, the feeling reminds me of Amy Lowell's "Patterns".  Keep up the good work!

Hi Wordancer,
Mmm. I like this style you are using.
The begining stanza caught my eye and the end really wrapped it up well. Great job! I relate because right now I have an unbelievable urge, as it looks like you do as well, to fly and chase after my dreams and experience as many things as possible. But sometimes my chains keep me grounded.

kcsgrandma, I looked up Amy Lowell's "Patterns", i see what you mean. I enjoyed reading it.

joy, one way or the other, most of us have chains, and a lot of times they are of our own making...

Peg...thanks love....and a Happy New Year to you too.

This is so lovely, Wordancer...Yet, does the body need wings as long as the soul is free and takes flight?  Ellie

This is remarkable, wordancer. I sometimes think that the soul is truely bound and will truely be free. Great read.

ellie, perhaps it the soul that is so chained by the chains of one's own fears, that the body can only seemingly stand frozen in one place.

little girl & raleighbttrfly, thanks for the read and your thoughts.
