He almost missed her standing there,
outside the alleyway,
as he was shopping in the square,
alone on Christmas day.

Her clothes were worn, her feet were bare,
and much to his dismay,
a hint of snow was in the air,
the sky was turning gray.

She looked at him, through tangled hair,
a homeless, unloved stray,
and in her eyes he saw a prayer,
and all that it conveyed.

Life he thought, is quite unfair,
an outrage, I dare say!
Then having no more time to spare,
he hurried on his way.

Other people, unaware,
strolled by without delay,
caught up in their own affairs,
this joyful holiday.

God’s mercy is it anywhere?
Kind spirits, where are they?
To help another in despair,
and take the pain away?

Will no one find the time to share
and give her what they may?
Or offer more than just a glare,
for that which they survey?

Will she be left, to sadly stare,
upon the bright display,
of selfishness, and Christmas flair,
humanity’s decay?

Abandoned to the cold night air,
this little angel lay,
and waited for the world to care
on this, most holy day.

Oh, Debbie; This poem is a beautifully written wake-up call to us all. I pray that none of us are blind to the true spirit of love and giving.  Love, Ellie

Debbie, you should consider submitting this to the Poetry Buffet at the Main Site...it is indeed worthy...

Thank-you Ellie, you're right, the season of giving should be all year round!

Sunshine, thanks for the advice, what's the Poetry Buffet?  I'm so glad you like my poem!

Debbie~
Tenderly told - tenderly felt.
May we all open our hearts to those less fortunate.
We need to remember that they don't choose to be there.
Often a kind word and helping hand will lead them
to the warmth of a heart with a hearth.

A compassionate write, my dear.

Marge,   thank-you, you're right, it's not choice and any of us could find ourselves unexpectedly, in the same situation.  your kind words warm MY heart!

Jon,  yes, I do think we must share the same concerns for the growing commercialism and materialistic greed of the holidays. It is becoming very easy to forget the true spirit of the season!

Bestgirl,  Thank-you, I've noticed others here have written poems on the same topic. Hopefully, this message will stay in our thoughts long after the holidays are over!

makes me feel kinda guilty now. Guess theres so much I could do.

This is definitely a good reminder about the true meaning of the season, and very timely.  Thank you.
