Balm

In despair,
I reached out to you,
And you lifted me.
As we spoke,
I perceived
Your helplessness
And your futile wish
To make things right.
In confusion,
I could not tell you
That all I wanted,
All I needed,
Was what you gave:
Your caring.
Your gentle voice,
Your thoughtful words,
Anointing my heart.
Thinking of this, I see
That I also wished,
Not so long ago,
When the despair was yours,
To fix what I could not.
Despite my present pain,
I smile as I see
How foolish we are.
It is not ours
To heal each other's hurts.
That belongs to God.
He is the Master Healer.
He has given to us
To be the ointment,
To ease the pain
Of wounded souls,
Not to make whole,
But to make the healing
More bearable.
The Physician allows us
To be His instruments,
To bless and be blessed.
I thank Him for using you
As my balm tonight.

Oh, I love this! Your faith and the tenderness of love as healing balm. A beautiful and tender poem. You really should post your poems of faith in the spiritual forum too. Love, Ellie    P.S. thank you so much for your lovely replies to my poems.

KCS~
What a lifting thought.
To be the ointment to help heal another's pain -
I like that !
A most inspirational offering from your heart.

What a wonderful way to think about the people who give you their love!  As instruments of God to ease the pain!

Thank you, my friends. This was therapy for me, as well as a gift for a very dear friend.

Ellie - You are more than welcome.  Your poems always brighten my day.  I'll think about the spiritual forum.  Thanks.

As for being an instrument, that is certainly not an original thought with me, but it helps me to remember that the most common way we see God work is through other people.  Thanks all for your encouraging replies.

Thank you, Jon.  To tell the truth, I was very tired when I wrote this, so I'm glad to hear it reads well.     I appreciate your comments.

Thanks for the lovely reply, Vicky.  Yes, it is great therapy.  For some reason, it's easier to say some things in poetry than in prose.  As you know, this was meant for one particular person, but it could apply to any caring friend at one time or another.  Thanks for being my friend.

Love and hugs,
