Sand flows slowly downward in the glass. Marking the passage of time in precise measure. Moving smoothly through the narrow neck, constant, relentless, unaffected by humanity. Is this then the sum of a life? The movement of sand in a clear glass? Impartial and sterile, guided by gravity, instead of the compassion of men? Who among us can say with certainty that the billions walking the earth are even aware of any other individual existance other than their own? And when we become aware of another soul, do we treasure it as we would our own? Or simply tolerate it as a means to control the boredom of our individuality. Is that a sincere sence of loss we feel, when the sands run out for another? Or relief, that we will survive another day, that our glass is not yet empty. I ponder this as the sands in my glass flow downward, marking the passage of my time. In the end, will anyone notice the absence of sand in my glass? The end of my time? I think not. If the truth be known, we are simply creatures here for a moment in eternity. As with all creatures, we live, we die, we are forgotten by time, falling steadily in the glass. the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost |

Pegasus; Exquisitely written poem. I don't agree with the fatalism, because being an optimist, I believe that we are each beautiful creations, here for a profound purpose, that is, to love and be loved. Time is meaningless in the hands of God. Ellie Summers haunting melody that awakens the butterflies, calling them to join the dance in their silent song of praise to God. eL |

Is our existense a mere grain of sand in that glass? Who knows. But your poem pegasus111 is really in depth on that question. Perhaps its even closer to answering it. --Little Girl |
