I can't help but feel sorry for those that get a thought in their head and have to come and post it...yep...ME!!! What's the most precious gift you ever think of; of course I know most will say children or the love of their life, but I mean a gift, one that has been wrapped or maybe its not been able to be wrapped because of the unique dimensions? For me, it's a brooch, two cats entwined, one black, one white...I have no idea as to the cost but treasure it because it was found because of my love of cats and because I believe that love means being close, i.e. entwined and these two cats are wrapped around each other...I wear it whenever I need confidence at a meeting or social engagement and somehow it makes me feel loved! So, yours is? < !signature--> Yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream... [This message has been edited by RainbowGirl (edited 12-13-1999).] |

Great idea Rainbow I have to think about this a little more and I'll be back later with my answer...... A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire! |

The gift really wasn't wrapped. It was handed to me by a friend. He said he was cleaning out his mother's attic and found this book. He thought I might like it. When I took it, felt it in my hand, I fell in love. It began a passion that burns brightly to this day. The gift? A dictionary printed in 1813! Inside, tucked in some of the pages were: a bit of cloth from some long forgotten dress; a receipt for rental of a pasture - $1.00; a small piece of very old paper, so old there are chips of wood in it; and an invitation to a reception for a minister - the note is dated January 2, 1851! That is the gift I feel is most precious. The gift of words...the gift of history..and the gift of imagination - as I sit and wonder about all the people who've touched this book in the last 186 years! |

Hard to choose one most precious, but definitely in the running is a first edition Dickens book given to me for Christmas by my brother -in-law and his wife. I collect first editions and had found this rare and amazing discovery, a book no one even knows Charles Dickens ever wrote, it had only two editions and both long years after he died. It was a manuscript he never meant to publish but left to his eldest child who passed it down among his brothers and sisters until the last died in 1930 and left it for his children to decide its future, publish or give it to a museum. they chose to publish.I told them about it only because it was so fascinating to me, it was far beyond my budget. Well, they sought out the store I mentioned and bought it for ,me for Christmas, they said the look of surprised joy on my face was worth every penny. It is not the oldest book in my collection but certainly one of the most precious. Isn't it interesting how we wrodsmiths love books LOL [This message has been edited by Beki (edited 12-14-1999).] |

Had to respond with my most surprising, heartwarming Christmas gift. It was the year my dad died, and our son and wife had their first baby. All my other 4 kids lived nearby, but the one with the new baby (in N.C.). My dad left each of them $1000, and the 4 pooled theirs to fly my son, daughter-in-law and new granddaughter home for Christmas, plus kept it all a secret until they were here. I was so overjoyed, all I could do was cry. Twas a really precious moment. |

This one is a toughie because over the years I have been given so many things. I can think of two that mean the most to me. one tangible and one not. The most tangible one is a Bible given to me by my brother that I truly treasure. It is a Spirit Filled Life Bible that I really enjoy. The other thing is something from my grandmother when I was about eight and she taught me to embroider. She was very caring and patient with me. I gave her a runner for her bureau that I made for her that year and when she died (I was fourteen) it was given back to me. The runner is old and threadbare now but the talent she showed me that I had still lives on. Poetry~ Words falling on paper, painting a dream. Shawna R. Holder Boise, Idaho |

PDV: That's a truly wonderful, memorable gift..I have an Elizabethan dictionary from my father's family that I managed to save when he died...I refer to it quite a lot but sometimes I hate to keep turning the pages for fear one day they will be so flipped through the parchment can't be read...it has so much information in it, like farthings and popular internation phrases and is about 9" thick...but you know, I can't ever remember him looking at it...strange how are memories are...enjoy your gift as I'm sure you do ...I love history and families...such pleasures and treasures...thanks for telling... HUSG Pepper: the story you told me by mail, gives me back my faith in human nature, it's one you should tell...thank you! HUSG Beki: Wow!...What a gift and a memory.. I do have a couple of first editions but my most precious book is a bible that a friend of mine gave me. precious because I don't really believe in God but she did and she died soon after and was holding it but left a note for it to be given to me, the page was left open at the story of Rachel and if you know anything about me, then you will understand the significance of that....a treasured friend and a treasured gift and yes, I agree, I have so many books but you know, I always remember those I have read - instantly and can never read the same book twice...who will you leave your precious book to or did you never think of that? HUGS Sandgrain: Another memory...I just love knowing what is most precious to you all, big or small, costly or thought...makes no difference, the memories are so very precious...when my father died, he or my mother, not sure which, decided to give me £100 and I bought a rabbit coat, I still have it complete with mufflers but rarely wear it as I now hate to think of animals suffering but at the time....how we change...but yours is a memory to last a lifetime and with such happiness...may I ask, how old your grand-daughter is now? HUGS Wildchild: I have visions of a grand-mother teaching you to sew and casting eyes over your stitches...I never leant to embroider but did learn to crochet but to be honest, I hate the feel of wool through my fingers although one of my sisters is an expert at sewing and knitting...I prefer to be creative in a different way but I envy those that have the patience....did you ever embroider anything else after that?...Do you have a picture?..Love to see it if you do.. )) HUGS< !signature--> Yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream... I do have lots of things that I've embroidered but most I give away for wedding presents, Christmas gifts and such. I have considered posting my pic here in PiP but don't have anything recent so may have to make a trip to a photographer (hey there's a reason to visit the beauty salon lol)Was real happy to put a face to the name when you posted yours. Oh how I miss you, RBG... Precious gifts are just that...they are never purchased, but sometimes are hand-me-overs to those you know will treasure them as much, maybe more, than you ever did... I recently gave a treasured gift to a friend, something my grandmother wore beautifully, but for some reason, I couldn't pull it off... but I knew the recipient could! So I passed it on...and it matches her eyes beautifully! Merry Christmas, Friend! |
